We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Muerte a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Back in 2018 I rebranded to Wicked Hair Witch. Coming up with the name of my business was actually quite simple. Wicked Hair Witch came to life simply because I am a witch that loves to do hair. Being wicked is just a bonus. Mixing color is like mixing potions & maintenance appointments for me feel like hair rituals. Everyone needs a little hair magic in their life, and I feel like the name of my business lets you know that’s exactly what you’re going to get.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Of course! If you don’t know me, I am the colorist known as Wicked Hair Witch, but I go by Melissa for short, haha! I have been in the beauty industry for 8 years specializing in vivids, blonding, and color corrections. I’m very lucky to have a career I genuinely love and can use as an artistic outlet. Throughout my career I have been a platform artist at hair shows and have had my work published in magazines which is all literally a dream come true. A couple years ago I opened my own suite and it has been my main focus in my career. Within my salon space I have created a magical atmosphere that welcomes any and all to experience a little hair magic. I’m proud of having taken this step to be an independent business owner so I can truly portray my salon and my passion to its best potential.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building my business on social media really began with consistency. Consistent posting & engagement really helped me begin. I constantly think about who my target audience is and if my content is what will appeal to them. My advice to anyone looking to expand their business with social media is to always be consistent, and pay attention to your feed, it’ll literally show you what algorithms are pushing towards you & it will help you understand how to target your audience.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I truly believe word of mouth & social media along with my artistic drive have helped me build my reputation as a colorist. My clients in the chair and followers on social see how I’m big on education, I am constantly trying to learn new techniques and formulate with the newest color trends as well as educating my clients as much as possible on how to maintain their hair. This in turn has helped me build a loyal clientele and has strengthened my reputation as a colorist that cares for the hair not just when they’re in my chair, but afterwards as well.
