We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Moore recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My dad always told me that he never wanted to hear me say “I’m bored” if there’s a pencil and paper in the house and that really resonated with me and I was rarely bored. He also always made sure that I understood the importance of equating the depth of music and art together as one. He took me and my brother to see Pink Floyd the day after my 14th birthday and it was truly life changing. I just simply didn’t walk out of there the same little girl that had walked in. Music and art have kept me company my entire life. They’ve gently held my hand in the depths of life just as they’ve cradled me like a cloud reflects brilliant light on my brightest days. All throughout my life my dad and brother would find the biggest scrap of paper or side of a cardboard box, etc. and we’d all sit around the table and each draw until the entire surface was filled in with not just drawings but also with words, rotating the papers surface every so often so that we could add to eachothers doodles. Music always driving us in the background. We still do this when we’re all together and what a wonderful thing it is!! My daughters are now included in the practice and hopefully one day my grandchildren will be as well.
My mother gifted me in that her gentle, whimsical, all inclusive essence has always been responsible for my deepest roots. She gave me a beautiful jump start in life showing me how not to judge another person based on anything other than his or her character and for that I am forever greatful. These are values that have most certainly been passed down to my own three daughters These are the foundations that are so incredibly profound for what this world truly and desperately needs most now.
To both my parents, through it all, the tough times and the happy times, I just have to say thank you guys for it all. Without it I simply would not be the eccentric, quirky, passionate, akward, sensitive, goofball, heart on my sleeve, woman and mother that I am now. Through it all, I love you guys and I appreciate you and I thank you for never giving up on me.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to use art as a healing medium and to ultimately gain an arsenal of teaching tools in order to share that blissful relief with others who’d benefit from such a deeply positive outlet in this fierce world. I’d like to help others lessen their burdens in a healthy and fulfilling way. Art is the answer.
As a child I would find myself getting lost in the depth of a painting & I needed to know how the artist managed to show the viewer a way of seeing INSIDE of a flat sheet of paper. Raw, curious fascination gave way to silently driven determination to learn just how that worked.
Painting is my comfy spot in this world. A welcome retreat. A resolute bandaid, and for that I am thankful.
I strive to challenge the self taught artist I have become to reach futher and further. To embrace the process and savor the imperfections of my art. I’ve learned that art is a palpable gift that I can share and leave with this world if, you the viewer, are willing to open your eyes and listen.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
