Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Millender. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
It all began with a simple vision fueled by a deep passion for Academic Excellence, in honor of a brilliant academic and Biblical Scholar who unexpectedly passed away in his dorm at APU from an epileptic seizure.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The J.D.M – Legacy of Excellence Foundation was born out of a deep-seated passion for education, academic success, spiritual growth, and community uplifting. This organization was established in honor of a son, brother, and uncle by the name of Joshua DeShawn … to pay it forward, to create opportunities for individuals with a disability, who suffer from epileptic seizures, other debilitating conditions, and those who are at a disadvantage. Our ‘Youth Empowerment Resource Center’ is designed with the singular goal of nurturing talent, building confidence, and fostering the excellence of all students. We are not just an empowerment resource center for students with a disability, we are a community committed to making a lasting impact by providing valuable educational and community resources, as we build the “Legacy of Excellence” in honor of a brilliant scholar.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn as well as other people, life is a destination, not a journey. We must learn that it is the opposite, “life is a journey, not a destination. Our time is our most valuable resource for a successful life journey. We need to focus on our journey and not on someone else journey as we embrace change. It’s important to release those notions that hinder our growth because our happiness comes from within our personal life journey, the untold story that awaits us. Our journey is what we make of it and perceive it to be. Most importantly we must learn to trust the process.
