We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Kim Corter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa Kim, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Yes, there are three things that stand out to answer this question: 1. I do not compare myself to others in the field; otherwise, I’m hinging my potential success or failures on someone else’s vision.
2. I trust my instinct and have honed my intuition. This has served me to avoid many mistakes and quickly get back on my feet when things have not gone as expected. Business is not surface level and sometimes you will make a move or decision that baffles people…but works out because you went with your gut and not the norm.
3. If something doesn’t excite me, bring me joy, or align with my core values it needs to go. I have let go of major opportunities to protect my peace and enchant my life and business…. And surprisingly I never regret the choices I make from this mindset.
Melissa Kim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a seeker at heart, and unfortunately, my curiosity didn’t always lead me into the best of situations or circumstances. For many years I struggled and suffered through substance abuse due to emotional and psychological abuse, some self-inflicted, some from my environment.
Something in me had a deep knowing that there had to be more than what I was currently living. I made a conscious decision to change and move forward, even though I did not have a model or framework to follow. Slowly I began honoring the small still voice within me, instead of drowning it out. Healthier people, circumstances, and opportunities came my way, and the magic and mysterious moments of connection I once experienced as a child roaming the woods returned.
I help people breathe new life into the stagnant and stale aspects of life and business. Blending psychology, personal development, and spirituality in a way that offers my clients and students the opportunity to tap into self-empowered wisdom and utilize the synchronistic moments as guideposts. I teach classes, lead retreats and have a monthly membership group as well as private and group mentoring programs. I’m an author and speaker with multiple books.
My work centers around creativity, soul, and living an enchanted life.
The biggest problem I solve…. Is helping people break the trance of disempowerment and the monotony of living a life on autopilot. This affects an individual’s livelihood, abundance, and self-confidence, awakening the authentic self to something deeper.
One thing that sets me apart from the other mentors, coaches, and healers out there….is my unique intuitive process coupled with psychological awareness and spiritual perspectives. The client always holds answers, I do not have anything more than they do; the opportunity is to release resistance to receiving and expressing authentically.
I am most proud of the person I have become; I lead, teach, and guide in an inclusive manner, so those who resonate with my work know they are important and are just as valuable and wise, it is a reciprocal experience. There are no pedestals in my world, just magical people wanting to share and be seen.
Magic and enchantment are real, they are not woohoo abstract concepts, they live in the moments many are too busy to recognize. Living with intentionality and joy opens the imaginal realm for us to explore within our individual psyches.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
To move forward and shift the stagnant areas of my life, I had to bring my spiritual and personal values into my business. Prosperity and enchantment are two areas I have worked to cultivate. To do this, I had to get really honest with myself about my level of engagement with drama, where I was settling, and the inner critic governing my decisions and actions. I was tired, burning out, saying yes to everything because if I said no I felt guilty. I had to come to terms with the ways au was enabling the drama in my life. I was out of touch, miserable, and ready to quit my business. I wanted to run away and start over….instead, I got quiet, clear, and focused.
I decided to invite the magic back into my life, the moments of connection, time in nature, and made a promise to myself- if it wasn’t magical, potent, and simplified, it was going to have to wait. This became my gage for taking inspired action instead of working really hard and getting nowhere.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I challenge the beliefs and processes I witnessed play out with colleagues and others in my field. I kept telling myself, there has to be a better way….. then, when I had a “knowing”, or an intuitive hit…I honored it all the way through. This included being myself, and speaking my heart from a place of integrity and personal power. I never hid the hard stuff or tried to create a public persona as if everything was always perfect and wonderful. My audience LOVES the truth, as do most of us, and when they see someone genuine and kind and powerful….it inspires them and they feel safe. I am that person- I call it humble power.
When I make mistakes I own them, when I misspeak or say the wrong thing, I don’t pretend to be superhuman or above any of it. It is important to be real, have integrity, and honor your authentic soul…it goes a long way and people will feel it.
People think they want a hero when really they need a friend, someone who can say, “I see you, you’ve got this, and you are not alone, and this can all shift into something incredibly magical and amazing if you just stay with it”.
