We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Henderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
My writing journey began when I was a young girl. Other students were great at math or science. I received encouragement and support on the stories I wrote. My imagination was filled with hope and joy.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that I’m never alone when I touch the keyboard or put the pen to paper. God is always with me. I pray before writing. Whether I’m creating a fiction or non-fiction piece, I pray that I will glorify God with each word.
I write inspirational messages sometimes humming with humor. Some of my writing is filled with joy and other pieces are more serious. In every piece, my goal is to remind people that they are loved and appreciated.
I hope that I will leave a legacy of faith, hope, and joy.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an award winning author of inspirational messages. I’m the author of children’s books, “Licky the Lizard” and “Grumpy the Gator”. I have many non-fiction and fiction pieces in various anthologies and collections. I write for online and in-print publications, such as Guideposts and FaithOnEveryCorner.
My messages always include an element of faith and inspiration. My blog usually offers stories of my life experiences.
Those stories often share funny happenings with the grandchildren. I don’t mind sharing silly mistakes I’ve made or hilarious situations that I’ve experienced.
My writing journey began as a young girl. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed sharing faith, hope, and joy with the world.
Whether you need a laugh for the moment or a serious look at life, readers will find ways to know they are loved and cherished.
I’m a Deacon, Elder, and Stephen Minister. I enjoy volunteering in the community. Sharing time with family and friends brings me joy.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Life as a writer can be challenging at times. The first time I heard someone say, “Oh, you’re an author, you must make a lot of money.”, I had to laugh. Authors, under most circumstances, don’t get paid a lot of money.
Personally, my writing journey is about sharing the love of God with others. I pray that my messages will help people develop a personal relationship with God.
Yes, I’ve perservered through times of writing for no pay. Those non-payment times remind me that my writing isn’t about the money. It’s about the message.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission in life is to help people have a relationship with God. Through my writing and speaking, I aim to share His love and glory with the world. Volunteering in the community is a great way to meet people and develop relationships. Everyone has a personal and unique life journey. Sometimes a listening ear or a hug or an opportunity to chat can be ways to change the world for the better.
