We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Harper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
When the world shut down in 2020, like many others, I turned to TiKTok for fun. When I came across Run Buddy Mobile in Arizona, I knew that I found my dream job. David was exercising dogs in a van on non-motorized slat mills. Working as a Veterinary Technician, Receptionist, and Kennel for 22 years, I know dogs. I researched everything that I could regarding this, new to me idea, and saved.
I started Run Rascaldyroo K9 Gym LLC in May 2022. It wasn’t until December 2023, I was able to devote all of my time and energy to my business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After purchasing a high roof van and top of the line slat mills, I needed a business name. We all have that one special dog, mine was Ben. His nickname “Rascaldyroo” was an easy choice for me. He and I traveled across America together several times and was such a special boy.
Once Run Rascaldyroo was ready, I started exercising dogs in early mornings and late evenings. I worked at a Veterinary Hospital during the afternoons. Due to such a new concept, it took a lot of hustle to help pet parents understand the benefits. I knew that once people saw how happy their dogs were while exercising and how relaxed they were after, they would love this activity for their dogs. Dogs are able to exercise at their own pace, rather than ours on a normal walk. Many clients are disabled or extremely busy due to work or family. They understand that their dogs need exercise. Recommended once or twice a week, gives them peace of mind that their dogs have received an amazing mental and physical workout. I continue to attend as many dog events as possibly, so many Pawrents are still unaware of the benefits and safety of the slat mills.
A dog is never forced to exercise. Helping them relax, figure out the slat mill, and gain confidence is beautiful to watch. The odds your will enjoy their workout is high. Out of hundreds of dogs now, only 8 dogs were like “nope, not for me”. Those are great odds.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
In February 2024, I began going LIVE on TikTok. Taking my time to teach about K9 exercise and using humor, I have grown from 1000k followers to 11.5k in just 4 months. My skills in improv and stand-up comedy helps keep my audience entertained while learning. With TikTok, I have been able to raise donations for shelter dogs and bring awareness to the overflow that rescue organizations must handle.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
With this type of service, you must do it for the right reasons. Some people think this is easy money, “just put a dog on a slat mill, let em run, easy” No, you must know dog behavior and understand that every experience, will be different. Patience and good energy must be used at all times. I recommend dog parents be present to cheer on their dog. Dogs love to please, so when they see their people happy and excited, this really motivates them.
Showing love, excitement, and expertise for the service that i provided is what truly brings clients back weekly.
Having this outlet for anxious high anxiety dogs, dogs that are overweight, or exercise for dogs with joint/arthritis issues in a climate controlled environment is finally here in Winston-Salem, NC
