What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One significant lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that I had to fit a traditional mold to be successful in the legal profession and as an entrepreneur. Early in my career, I was deeply influenced by the archetype of the stoic, unemotional, and fiercely independent lawyer. This image pervaded law school and the early years of my practice, suggesting that showing vulnerability, empathy, or even too much personality was unprofessional and could undermine my authority and effectiveness.
The turning point came as I ventured into entrepreneurship and began to interact more closely with clients in the context of my own law firm, The Law Spot. I realized that the qualities I was suppressing—compassion, openness, and genuine personal connection—were actually my greatest assets, especially when working with small businesses and female entrepreneurs. These traits allowed me to build stronger, more meaningful relationships with my clients, who appreciated the authenticity and personal attention they received.
Unlearning this lesson wasn’t easy; it required me to challenge deeply ingrained stereotypes and confront my own fears about professional acceptance and success. However, embracing my true self and rejecting the idea that there’s a single template for a successful lawyer or business owner has been liberating and rewarding. It has not only set The Law Spot apart in a competitive industry but has also fostered a supportive community around our brand.
This experience taught me the power of authenticity in building a business and a personal brand. It’s a lesson I now share with other women in law and entrepreneurship, encouraging them to lead with their unique strengths and to redefine success on their own terms.
