We recently connected with Melissa Gjelaj and have shared our conversation below.

Melissa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

Well, since I can remember my mind has always been flooding with ideas . I can remember very vividly when I was dating my now husband Mark and talking to him for hours in the car over coffee about my future and what I envision it to look like . I always wanted to own my own medical spa but I was really into studio suites . They weren’t a thing really yet then . I wanted woman to be their own boss and handle business their way but also help them and guide them . I’ve been working since I was 14 and to be honest , even though it was the best learning experience I never liked working for someone else . I was no where near ready then to make my move and then slowly but surely studios were popping up everywhere. I got married , became a mother and then instantly that was my main focus . When my husband and I were finally ready to open a business I knew my first business I wanted to be very intimate and cozy . So I came up with Melissa’s Skin Beautique. Skin/ Beauty studios that other woman can operate on their own but still all work as a team like any other med spa would . It’s been an amazing journey and a blessing in so many ways.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

My journey really began in NYC. I started as a receptionist in one of NYCs hottest spas and then became manager . I loved everything about the business aspect and then getting to know all my aestheticians and solving my own skin issues I decided law school wasn’t for me anymore haha and I found my calling . It took off from there . We do everything at the studios from brows , to all kinds of skincare treatments , Microblading , and more ! What I think sets us apart from most places is our honesty . This isn’t just a job for us woman . We don’t just wait for our paycheck . We create relationships with our clients and do everything in our power to give them the skin of their dreams and everything else ! I’m proud of where we all our here and we push one another to do our absolute best and we have a lot of fun !

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Honesty . That is key to becoming successful and building a good reputation. Don’t buy the fake it until you make it . Believe it or not your clients aren’t stupid . Be open and honest .

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

Word of mouth. Social media is amazing too but my clients have sent me new clients from all over the world ! I have clients that visit family here from other countries and will build their trip around their appointment. I’m so grateful .
