We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Friel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I have had the privilege of working on during my time at 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirit Company is our involvement in various philanthropic initiatives. The core ethos of our company is rooted in giving back to those who have served our country, and I am incredibly proud to be a part of these efforts.
One particular project that stands out is our collaboration with the Medal of Honor library. We have worked to raise funds and support the completion of this important project, which serves as a tribute to the brave men and women who have been awarded the highest military honor. The library not only preserves their legacy but also educates future generations about their sacrifices and contributions to our nation.
Additionally, our partnership with the Vail Veterans Program holds a special place in my heart. This program provides opportunities for veterans to participate in adaptive sports and recreational activities, promoting physical and emotional healing through outdoor experiences. It is truly inspiring to witness the impact these programs have on the lives of our veterans, empowering them to overcome challenges and build camaraderie with fellow service members.
Being able to contribute to these philanthropic endeavors and witness the positive impact they have on our community and veterans is incredibly rewarding. It is a humbling experience to know that our work at 10th Mountain Whiskey and Spirit Company is making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
One aspect of the creative journey that non-creatives may struggle to understand is the ebb and flow of creativity itself. As a creative individual, I have come to realize that inspiration is not always readily available, and creativity cannot be forced. There are moments of brilliance where ideas flow effortlessly, but there are also times when I experience writer’s block or feel like my content is not resonating as I had hoped. This unpredictability can be challenging for non-creatives to comprehend, as the creative process is often seen as a linear and consistently productive endeavor.
It is important to recognize that creativity is a dynamic and organic process that is influenced by various factors, both internal and external. Embracing the uncertainty and accepting that not every idea will be a home run is a crucial part of the creative journey. It is through these moments of struggle and self-doubt that growth and innovation can emerge.
One piece of advice that I have found helpful in navigating these creative challenges is to take a step back and revisit sources of inspiration. Whether it be exploring nature, engaging in a hobby, or immersing oneself in art and culture, finding moments of inspiration can reignite creativity and provide a fresh perspective on creative projects.
By shedding light on the nuances of the creative process and sharing insights on how to navigate creative obstacles, we can offer valuable enlightenment to individuals who may not fully grasp the intricacies of the creative journey.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, for me, lies in the profound sense of appreciation, understanding, and empathy that it fosters. As an artist, creating and sharing my work allows me to connect with others on a deeply emotional and personal level. When my art resonates with someone and they express appreciation for it, it is a validating and fulfilling experience that reinforces the impact of creativity in fostering human connection.
Furthermore, being an artist has opened my eyes to the beauty and diversity of perspectives that exist in the world. Through my creative endeavors, I have learned to appreciate the unique talents and expressions of others, and to understand the depth and complexity of human experiences. This understanding has allowed me to cultivate a sense of empathy and compassion towards others, as I recognize the power of art in bridging differences and uniting individuals through shared emotions and experiences.
In essence, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to cultivate a deeper sense of connection, appreciation, and empathy both within myself and with those around me. It is through creativity that we can celebrate the richness of human expression, connect with others on a profound level, and ultimately, foster a more empathetic and understanding society.
