We recently connected with Melissa Feris and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Some of the biggest trends I see in the mural industry are that companies are utilizing Mural Artists for marketing and advertising purposes. Utilizing murals as a way to market can be a tax write off for most corporations. I think these trends are amazing, as they allow artists to utilize their painting talents in more ways than just painting on canvas. The only concern that I see is that companies might not be hiring suitable Mural Artists that are using accurate paints for longevity.
Melissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was genetically predisposed to art through my father, as he was also an artist. I attended Park University in Missouri and received a bachelor degree of fine arts; soon after graduation I started painting at the request of family and friends and my passion blossomed into painting murals for small businesses and now large businesses. I paint murals using high quality acrylic paint both large and small scale. I also have been contracted to restore murals. What sets me apart from my competition is that I’m very versatile; I am able to paint multiple genres of art, such as realism, graffiti, and cartoon murals. I am most proud of my growth as an artist to master each genre.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have been painting meals for 26 years and have been through two recessions; one in 2008 and one in 2019. I continued to paint Mural‘s as well as pivoted to painting on canvas and have survived both of these recessions.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was that art is not perfect. There is no such thing as perfection in art and there is beauty in all art work.
