We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Desveaux a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Melissa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
A few years after I was married, my husband and I wanted to start a family together. But what our future held was not at all how we expected. After a miscarriage with my first pregnancy, I was lost. I had no one to turn to who would understand my pain.
A few months later, I was pregnant again only to have my baby die in utero. I gave birth to her and my world shattered. My vision of life with a family at this point was no longer in sight.
It took another two miscarriages before I gave birth to my two babies who bring me so much joy.
Fast forward a year after my youngest son was born, I wrote my story.
Writing was not something I was used to especially one that is deeply personal and heartbreaking.
After I launched my book, within two weeks I had two articles written about my story and a guest speaker invitation for a national charity event!
To say this was overwhelming for me is an understatement!
I realised that there was more in me that wanted to come out, experience and talk about. The idea of how I can help people with a similar experience brought me back to writing. How could I help people share their own personal stories so they can find their own path to healing?
A book I thought! I could ask for stories and publish them in a book! So that’s exactly what I did.
I learned a lot from this experience. How to organize a group of people to write, go through the publishing process and then launch and sell the book.
I knew that this is how I wanted to help people share their stories so they can heal themselves and change the lives of others.
Not everyone gets a chance to share their story, especially in a published book that relates to them and this is why I started publishing anthology books as well as authors publish their own personal stories.
While I’ve now published 5 of my own anthologies, multiple journals and books for my clients as well as created my own publishing courses, my desire is to create something from nothing. The passion I have for giving people a chance to write their stories will continue and now in a magazine.
Melissa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Getting into the publishing industry wasn’t easy but it did literally come to me. Maybe it was a sign from God. I just followed my heart.
I’ve mostly learned everything I know about book publishing through trial and error and coaching to learn more about business and marketing. I’ve built my own websites, created my own book publishing courses and contributed to anthologies.
As a business, I help writers and authors get their books published so they can share their message and make an impact in the world.
Being in the creative space allows me to discover new things and create a vision for myself and others. Just like the magazine we are creating.
I’ve taken on challenges when it comes to publishing books and by far, the most rewarding was publishing the Letters of Love series of books. I was able to meet people from around the world and share their own letters of Love in all forms. And for many of the authors, it was healing.
I am an introvert and it’s taken a lot of time for me to do what I’ve been able to achieve so far. But I am proud of being able to take authors to published ones. And being recognised for my achievements in helping families through pregnancy and infant loss.
This is only a small piece of my story. Maybe I’ll write another book about it one day!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Writing my own personal story and giving the opportunity to create books to help others write and share their own experiences has been a rewarding journey for me.
My mission is to create a platform where writers can write a short story and have it published in our online magazine so they get to be seen, share their story or experience and grow their own global presence.
The creative side of me comes out when I’m excited about a new journey I’m on and when I am able to help writers or authors get the results they want in their own journey.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I had to navigate my way in the publishing world and have brought everything I’ve learned into my own courses. I wish I knew how time-consuming it would be to publish a book and all the different stages there are involved. There are thousands of resources online and I’ve gathered a few over the years which have helped me through my own writing journey.
