Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Corbin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I am a Cosmetic and Plastic surgery PA-C (Physician Associate Certified) who worked in the Orthopedic and Infectious Disease floor as a Medical Assistant before going to PA school. A defining moment for me was when I went from being the provider to being the patient and needing a total hip replacement at 35 years old. I am a former athlete and very active, have two little girls who are 2 and 4 years old, I work full time on my feet, and I had to relearn how to walk independently and care for myself. It was incredibly eye-opening and I was really able to resonate with my former patients who had similar surgeries and see firsthand how difficult and painful the recovery was.
In my 6 weeks off work, I worked so hard to come back to a job I love. It made me so grateful for my body, for my job and patients who I love and for all the simple things I took for granted before surgery like being able to get through a work day. I am still going to PT twice a week and am not 100% but will continue to put in the work in and I know I will get there eventually.

Melissa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Board-Certified Physician Associate and cosmetic specialist who performs comprehensive cosmetic evaluations and advanced cosmetic procedures, including Botox, dermal fillers, cellulite injections, photo light treatments (including Broad Band Light and Skin Tyte), body contouring procedures and C02 Laser resurfacing. I am the lead injector at PSS Medispa in Annapolis. My passion is preventative medicine and natural-looking results. I strive to change the stereotype around injectables. Botox and dermal filler should look very soft and subtle when done correctly. Everyone will know you look better, but they will not be able to tell why. Botox and filler also prevent lines from getting deeper by training the muscles and stimulating collagen. The best time to start Botox and filler is before you see wrinkles and volume loss at rest. I love educating and treating young patients. I am really proud of all of my patients and the relationships that we have built. They are my work, trust me with their faces and keep coming back. It means the world to me. What sets me apart is my attention to detail and my injection technique. My favorite advanced filler technique is using the cannula (flexible needle) to lift the corners of the nose and mouth and sculpt the jawline without surgery. I’d love you to check out my work on Instagram @that_injector_life, give me a follow or come see me!

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
While natural yet effective results are important, the most important thing for success is honesty and building trust with my patients.
My patients are like my family, I send them holiday cards, emails to check in after their procedures and truly care about their lives and wellbeing. I love seeing their acomplishments and watching their families grow.
I keep my training up to date and am always studying the latest technique and product on the market. Because of this, my patients trust me and are open to my suggestions. I love injectables (Botox and filler) and bring the joy of what I do to each appointment. It’s a happy procedure. I consider it self care and you will leave looking and feeling amazing.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Experience and honesty. If you do this long enough, you’re going to have complications. It’s all in the way you manage them. I’m always honest about the benefits and risks of injectables. I’ve changed my practice to use a cannula to minimize bruising and to make filler safer for my patients as a result of a complication I had. I’ve grown a lot as a provider in my 10 + years and will never promise a result that I can’t deliver.
I’m also honest about what I feel will help patients the most. I let them tell me their concerns, work with their budget and am realistic about what we can achieve. Filler is a building process and the best transformations are gradual. By being honest and doing a little bit at a time, people come back and send their friends too.
