We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful MELISSA CARTER. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MELISSA below.
Alright, MELISSA thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I wish I had taken more risks in life. That’s probably my only regret. That fearlessness is what sets you ahead and later creates wisdom if you let it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a singer and music educator (vocal coach, who works in music full time under various different hats. Singing has always been apart of my life ever since I can remember, it was second nature. I began recording at 16, out out my first project at 20, and began teaching at 22. Essentially my gift heals others and thrills me but, me using my gift to help others achieve that same thrill is what fulfills me the most. Helping people on their vocal journey is what I live by and I do it in an unconventional way that brings that excitement back into learning. Music education is a field that as a black woman I want to change and reconstruct so that little black and brown children grow up with access to top knowledge education of the musical arts, without having to outsource for it. So, for that reason, I decided to make myself the hub.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The gleam of my students’ faces when they hear me sing or the compliments how my voice impacts others drives me in two directions: to continue with my professional recording career and creating my own Music Institution. Those goals make me what to keep going.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
That I get to wake up every to the freedom of doing what I love everyday. Even though I’ve had to sacrifice stability, learn the importance of delayed gratification, and face many uncertainties, the more I go forward that precious steps I’ve made begin to make sense. Lets me know that I’m in the right direction.
