We recently connected with Melissa Boyd and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
As a child, I had a very big secret, I could speak to the dead and could see the future. In the early 1970’s this was never spoken about and so I hid my gifts for decades. At 9, o started having more visions for other people and messages from the spirit world- I wrote them down with crayons and would pass along to their families. Each time the messages healed the person and they were grateful. Since I saw the future unfolding, I knew I needed to help with environmental issues and public policy.
In my teens I became an activist and soon was leading organizations that served humanity all the while using my intuition to do so. My volunteer and community work on social change gained attention of others and I was appointed as Commissioner on Volunteerism. As a leader, my roles included working with US Senators including Ted Kennedy, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins among others. All the while my recognition as a leader keeps getting highlighted.
Finally, in my thirties I became a lobbyist and started to dabble in offering sessions.. quietly.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would become a full time Medium. My secret was hidden for decades until one day, I came out publicly as Medium. It was captured on a well-known political television show in my role as a Lobbyist I was speaking about health care reform in Maine.
Drawing in a deep breath, my compassionate voice leaped out of my chest “Legislators have a responsibility to show up at a committee meeting informed, energetically ready to vote and speak on behalf of people they represent. Let’s ditch the cigarettes, gallons of coffee and pizza and show up with open hearts and lemon water. Healthcare reform demands that everyone show up with clean energy, an open heart and mind and be present in the moment. As a Medium, I know the value of taking care of your energy and how important it is to the purity of the outcomes and the direction of wellness.”
The next day at the statehouse, people asked me to conduct sessions for them. I was stunned, thrilled, and overwhelmed. Each Senator I channeled messages for, shifted. Their floor speeches were filled with more depth and insight than ever before.
That same night, I had a dream that spirit would gift me a free office on Main St. in Kennebunk, Maine. And in the dream, I was surrounded by bees. The next day I went to an art show at The Hive, a local art collaborative, there I bumped into a woman in the bathroom. She asked if I was coming to their open house. My response was, “yes, do you have anyone doing psychic mediumship readings?” “No, do you know someone?” “YES, ME!”
I showed up with a chair and a card table and did 15 min readings for over 30 people, all who were blown away by the information. At the end of the night the woman asked me if I had an office? No, I said. “Well, if you are willing to open the art house and help write some grants you can have the back room.” This was not the first time spirit had suggested I become a full time medium, I had tried before but the timing was not quite right.
The next day I quit my job, I knew I had to do this and many people thought I was crazy.
Without a paycheck for the first time in my life- made a cardboard sign that said Readings with Melissa and within 6 months was working worldwide all by word of mouth.
Now I conduct sessions to provide evidence of the after life and help business leaders to trust their own intuition. My clients range from grieving parents to award winning authors, CEO’s, Executive Leaders to Life Coaches and young activists.
My heart is full and I am so happy I took the risk to come out as medium. What I do now is bridge the tangible and ethereal realms, mainstreaming the conversation on spiritual intuition in everyday decision-making and leadership.
My advice is “Sometimes you have to leap and build your wings on the way down. ” Trust your path no matter what – we are all evolving.
Melissa , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My company is called Grow Your Knowing. My clients are individuals seeking spiritual guidance and mediumship services and entrepreneurs and business owners who wish to grow their intuitive gifts.
I am most proud of my philanthropy work helping to raise money and awareness on children’s issues including grieving children, art programs for kids, camps for kids and organizations that promote peace.

As a child, Melissa sat under a forsythia bush and wrote down notes about the future from the voices she heard from the spirit world. Over the years she has delivered thousands of messages from the spirit world to their loved ones on earth. As a child, in the middle of the night, she would awaken to write down notes from spirit people and then have her mother drive her to a grocery store the next day to deliver the messages to people she saw in her dreams. Each time, the names, dates and information was accurate and helped to change the person receiving the messages. At 16, her Sunday School Student Jimmy was murdered by the serial killer Lewis Lent. Inspired by Jimmy, Melissa has offered hundreds of complimentary sessions to parents and families who have experienced a tragic loss of a child.
The Center for Grieving Children and the Child Alert Foundation has praised her for helping children. One of her many premonition dreams unfolded in 1999, Melissa was instrumental in bringing Retired General Colin Powell to star in the media campaign that launched Giving Maine Promise on WGME 13. Giving Maine Promise was a program that came out of America’s Promise, which is dedicated to children’s issues. He even met with her to thank her for her visons and wrote her a thank you note for her efforts.
As a Lobbyist for environmental health, disability rights and substance abuse prevention she came out a as an Intuitive on a political television show and within two weeks started reading for legislators then she was offered a small room in an art collaborative free of charge. Melissa hung a cardboard sign outside and six months later, all by word of mouth, she was channeling for people around the globe. She has never looked back. She blends her intuitive gifts to make real world change and helps high powered leaders do the same.
There is a 6 month waiting list for a consultation with Melissa. As Advanced Teacher of Therapeutic Yoga, she is graduate of Kripalu, named the #1 Wellness Retreat in North America by Oprah and through yoga and died she herself released over 180 lbs.
For close to 12 years her monthly Meditate and Donate has helped to raise close to $450,000 to non-profit organizations helping youth and trained over 3,000 people on mindfulness and meditation. Melissa is recognized as a leader in the Yoga and Wellness world Melissa was Featured article “Soul Development with Melissa Boyd,” Boston Yoga Magazine, she was awarded a Driven Women award through the Kennebunk/ Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce and has even presented at Harvard University on Maine Earth Day, University Recycling Policies and Social Norming and went on to become a leader in Climate Change by helping to design and implement the first in the nation conference Achieving Global Energy Security which was recognized by the U.N.

She lives in Maine with her amazing wife Andrea and her sweet Austrian Labradoodles Quinn and Khalessi who are brother and sister.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Each experience that a person or group has with me, I send an email preparing them for our session or workshop. Providing handouts that are empowering and always give from your abundance and not from your reserve. I have never had to advertise, I work world wide and for the past 15 years I book 4-6 months in advance.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
After I left my job as a lobbyist with no money for the first time in my life, I took a stipend position handing out energy efficiency lightbulbs door to door. I need $5,000 to pay my bills and had no idea how I was going to come up with money. I meditated and tried to manifest the money to no avail. The day I was leaving the door to door position which paid $500, I was hit from behind by a lady talking on her phone and was brought to the hospital. I was fine, my car was fine but the next morning her insurance company called me to say they were sorry for the accident and wanted to send me a settlement check for $5,000. The check came the next week and I have never looked back. The universe will support you if you are very patient and have unconditional trust in your mission.
