We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melissa Arnold. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melissa below.
Melissa , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
I have the unique pleasure of working in both the cigar and wedding / event industry—two worlds brimming with creativity, allure, and individuals eager to make their mark and showcase their talents.
In the cigar world, artisanal cigars are always in demand and hold a special place in any enthusiast’s humidor. Few experiences rival the excitement of savoring small-batch, uniquely blended cigars crafted by industry experts with refined, discerning palates. They offer a chance to discover rare tobaccos, explore new regions, meet up-and-coming blenders, or try an unconventional vitola.
We’re noticing a surge of unique and unconventional flavors and names hitting the scene. Interestingly, while statistics show many people enjoy flavored cigars, most of my customers aren’t drawn to overly sweet options. That said, there’s still plenty of curiosity about bold concepts—like the idea of tobacco blended with a nuance of bacon! What!? Along with these daring flavors come equally unusual names, such as “Unicorn Tears,” “Sophisticated Hooker,” and “Fat Bottom Betty.” It all certainly keeps us on our toes.
One of the biggest trends in the Wedding Industry right now is the growing popularity of hiring unique and unconventional vendors who add a personal touch to celebrations. Portland, known for its abundance of creative business concepts, is a hub for this movement.
As someone stepping into the industry with a fresh and innovative vendor concept, I can say there’s no shortage of entrepreneurs bringing new ideas to the table. Together, we’re redefining what it means to create memorable and distinctive experiences for clients while building meaningful careers. It’s truly exciting to be part of an industry with endless creative potential—one that thrives on producing joy and unforgettable moments.
Melissa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
How did you get into your industry?
In February 2020, I unexpectedly found myself working a very part-time job at Rich’s Cigar Store. Then, Covid-19 came along and changed so much for so many people—including me. Fortunately, it redirected my path in a way I never in a million years could have anticipated. Cigars? Really? Today, I’m thriving in a fascinating niche industry where I feel my potential is truly being realized.
Since then, I’ve launched my own Events and Wedding Vendor business, Cigars With Melissa, and I’m currently studying at Tobacconist University to earn my Certified Cigar Sommelier Tobacconist (CCST) credential.
What kind of service do you provide?

What sets you apart from others?
My business stands out in a unique niche that many women with small business management backgrounds may not traditionally consider — the cigar industry. But I’m here to prove that there’s immense potential in this space. I’m not only thriving in my current role, where I actively serve my community, but I’m also flourishing in my entrepreneurial journey. What truly distinguishes my business is that there’s no one quite like me: my distinct background, personality, and unwavering passion for both my craft and cigar culture. I’m excited to bring this energy and enthusiasm to your guests and share what makes this industry so special!
What is the main thing you want people to take away from you?
I’m determined to shift the stereotype in the cigar industry. While there are many female influencers, I see a lack of women holding positions of power, wielding industry knowledge, and earning the prestige they deserve. Don’t get me wrong—I love seeing other women share what they’re smoking, and doing in life. It’s inspiring to witness their passion, and I truly value that sense of camaraderie. But when it comes to professional inspiration, I find myself following women who are actively shaping the industry, like Cynthia Fuente, Vivi M. Eiroa Hakim, and Raquel Quesada. Sadly, they remain a rare few.
I want women to know that cigars aren’t just a man’s pastime—they can be incredibly sensual, feminine, and undeniably fun. Additionally, if you enjoy darker spirits like bourbon or whiskey, smoking an equally fine cigar elevates the experience, creating a deeper level of sensory and stimulation. What’s not to love about that? I also encourage more women to step into this industry and help break the old stereotypes. There’s nothing more satisfying than proving to a skeptical man that my knowledge and palate are every bit as refined as his.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When I noticed a growing number of loyal clients who valued and trusted my opinions about cigars, I realized I could channel my 25 years of experience in service and management into an industry full of opportunities. Their support and respect gave me the confidence to launch my business, Cigars With Melissa.
As a Cigar Sommelier, I bring my expertise to events, sharing my passion for well-crafted cigars while creating memorable experiences. Over time, I hope my business reflects the same joy and excitement I’ve found in connecting with customers, exploring the cigar industry, and celebrating the art of a perfectly rolled stick.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
About four years ago, I asked my boss if I could take the reins of our Instagram account. Showcasing Rich’s products turned out to be an incredible learning experience, sharpening both my photography and writing skills in new and interesting ways. That creative growth has paved the way for me to branch out as a content creator.
Today, I’m proud to create for Verdun Fine Chocolates, Rich’s Cigar Store, and now, my own venture: Cigars With Melissa. Simply put, I’m having a lot of fun learning about photography & editing, but my favorite thing about social media posts would have to be pairing it with music.
On a personal note: It’s funny—I’ve never really thought of myself as an “artist.” I suppose I resonate more with the term “creative.” But for the sake of this article, I’ll indulge the idea. I’m a bit of a closet dancer and singer, and looking back, it’s probably something I should have pursued wholeheartedly when I was younger. Fear and a lack of encouragement held me back, but the drive to create and express myself through music has always been there. It’s something deeply ingrained in me, almost beyond my control.
Who knows? Maybe it’s time to start sharing my dancing on Instagram—or better yet, my blog. Ha!
