We recently connected with Melissa Allen and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I was a premed student and working at a local chain gym at the time. I had been working with an elderly woman that could only afford 3 personal training sessions. Being raised by my Grandmother made me feel a personal obligation to make sure this sweet lady could continue getting stronger on her own, after her limited time with me. I would take extra precaution in creating an exercise plan that she could do on her own. I had a boss that told me to put her on leg press machine so that she would be dependent on working with me. That was the day I future changed, and I realized I was not going to attend medical school, I was going to go into business for myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started a mobile personal training company that eventually morphed into a medical fitness studio. I now provide training and coaching services, soft tissue therapy, and specialize in injury recovery.
4 years ago, my husband and I launched a mineral sunscreen lotion company after our puppy discovered skin cancer on my husband’s head. Our sunscreen is called Kovr (pronounced cover). We make sunscreen for active outdoor people that move and sweat. You can read the entire story on the About Us page of our website here:

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Believing in yourself and your ability to be successful.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Definitely. I found my calling.
