Melinda, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I get asked a lot, How did you come up with your name of your salon. Well this name was planted by God through my gift and talent of what I do. Unleash Me is what all My Beautiful Queen Clients say before they sit in the chair. It’s also how they feel when I give them that sassy hair-cut, that color that wows them, that beautiful creation of a hair style that thought they couldn’t Rock. It was only befitting to use Unleash Me as my Salon -Boutique name. “Unleash Me Hair Boutique” where we Freely Create U. It’s just we do!



As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, my name is Melinda Spurling and when i was just a teenager, my desire was to always become a hair stylist, I started by attending Jack Yates high school for the cosmetology program in the 90’s. I graduated in the top of my cosmetology class. Soon after that I work for numerous franchises Fantastic Sam’s, Great Clips, TGF Haircutters. I learned so much and got the experience that I needed to get to the next level. It let me know that this was only the beginning of my journey in the Hair Biz.
I moved from the commission side to the self- employment side as a leap of faith. As you may know working for Franchise company. I couldn’t take the client’s list bc of company polices. So I rented a chair at local salon in the area and built my clientele up through word of mouth, referrals and passing out cards. For the next 15 years I had a successful career in being my own Boss. While working for myself I got to thinking. I would like to try my hand at my own Salon. The name of my Salon is unique, The name stems from my journey and my gift of doing hair. “Unleash Me Hair Boutique” where we Freely Create U. I opened my salon in the midst of the Pandemic of Covid in the year of 2020. My clients were so receptive and supportive in this process. In creating a beautiful Salon for my client I also branched out in Styling and Upping my game of trying to brand a Product line for my Salon. I came up with the name “Ulidium” hair care for the next generation. The product line consist of Moisturizing shampoo and Conditioner, Apple Cider Vinegar shampoo and conditioner, Sulfate Free shampoo and conditioner, style products that help my clients and potential clients protect and tame there hair while not being able to make it to the salon. What I’ve learned thru out this leap of faith, I learned how to pivot, I learned that its not about changing the game but, its about changing how to go about playing it. I love and specialize in styling, coloring, cutting and most of all Micro LInks and Extensions. At Unleash Me Hair Boutique we pride ourselves in giving good customer quality services to each client that graces our salon.


Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been: . to give good customer service
. listen to your clients request
. repeat back to your as what their desired look is
. make suggestion that will help them to go about getting the look and style they desire
. be honest in your ability to create and design the look
. bring to life the look
. send them out with either suggestion and tip to maintain look and product advice or sale of product
This is done repeatedly, with every client. Its not hard but it does take consistency on the stylist part. I also have a complete Website where client can book appointments. Social media plays a big part as well. I had to hire a Social Media Advisor and that helped me reach the audience and potential clientele that has never heard of me. This has been my proven for sure way I built my clientele.



Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me in building my reputation within the world of hair, is my foundation and training in the basic facts of giving quality customer service and matching it with the skills and techniques of creating beautiful haircuts, hair color and styles. I not had training in beauty school but learned a lot for free through the franchised company that i worked for. I took all these notes and now I’m writing my own story about how made it all come together. For this reason, I have a successful clientele and it keeps flourishing. My goals to now pass on my customer service skills and knowledge to other up and coming style within my salon.
