We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Meli Malavasi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Meli below.
Alright, Meli thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My business idea came to me as something very unexpected.
My original idea was to be a star, a rockstar in the music business, but no matter how hard I tried I could never find happiness in what I was doing. Seemed like I was always “waiting for the next big thing” and I wasn’t able to focus on being present and enjoy music.
One day I got really tired and depressed of the same old thing, same unpaid gigs, same performing places and I decided to do something different.
I started teaching vocal lessons on Youtube. Little by little my audience started requesting more and more videos because they liked my unique and simple way of teaching.
That’s when the idea of a business came up! I was excited and I felt needed in the music business for the first time in a long time.
As my channel grew I was feeling very uncertain because I didn’t know I could turn this into a business. I just thought ” this is what I normally do for a living, teach lessons” , so I’m just going to expand my audience from California to the world. My biggest motivation was that I REALLY wanted to help people find their voices.
I started my Youtube Channel, Meli Music Lessons, by posting only 4 videos on Youtube that targeted things people where always struggling with in my music lessons. I left my Youtube channel alone for 6 months and didn’t post anything for a while and to my surprise, I was receiving many positive and encouraging comments from strangers who wanted to learn more. That’s when I knew this was going to work.
They had found a unique way of learning singing and I had found a unique way of teaching it, thanks to them.
I was offering a very easy, step-by-step vocal technique that was not found on Youtube, and I think that made it easy for any upcoming singers to find me and follow me.
This idea of having my own Youtube channel where I could connect and help others singers around the world got me very excited because I could actually make a living in music and build an amazing community.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi ! My name is Meli Malavasi. I’m a vocal major graduated from Los Angeles College of Music.
I teach singers how to make singing simple. With my step-by-step vocal techniques you will become the singer you want to be in no time. Together we can work on those low, middle and high notes to make them crystal clear. Work on that voice break to eliminate it. Be able to hit those high notes without any strain. Most importantly, have confidence in your singing abilities to perform in front of others.
I hope my team and I can meet you to begin this beautiful singing journey together.
I got into the teaching business because I had taught in many other music academies and decided I was ready to make a difference in people’s lives by opening my own academy. Meli Music Lessons.
We offer 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons online, through zoom. If your voice is feeling stuck or if you were always curious about singing but don’t know where to begin, we provide you with a series of exercises, techniques and tips that will help you sing freely. We also learn your favorite songs and teach you how to sing them correctly and effortlessly.
I am most proud of almost reaching 50K on Youtube this year. I couldn’t have done it without your help!
If you want to book a lesson or check our online courses including our newest course: “Singing in 3 Simple Steps”, please head over to: www.melimusiclessons.com
Would love to meet and connect with you!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One time I was performing in front of a small audience, in a coffee shop, and my voice just wouldn’t cooperate with me. I was in the middle of finals at school and I was exhausted. But I pushed through and even thought I sang, my vocals weren’t 100% on point.
I told myself ” I did it, concert is done”…
By the end of the concert the coffee shop owner came to me and said ” I think you should seriously consider vocal lessons”. My whole body trembled and I felt very embarrassed. After my ego took a big hit I decided to smile and say “thank you, I will consider it”.
Even though that comment destroyed me and I cried very hard for like a week. I also knew it was time to step out of my comfort zone and get a coach.
A friend suggested a coach from school I haven’t tried yet, so I booked a lesson with her.
In less than one hour, my whole perspective on singing changed. I learned so much on that class so I kept coming back and I was able to take my singing to the next level thanks to that resilience. That hunger of never giving up and always being willing to learn. So.. you can do this too!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started building my Youtube channel, @MeliMusicLessons, by posting only 4 videos on Youtube.
I think the key is to find things that not just one, but many persons need!
In my case, I knew that many people were struggling to do “vibrato” with their voices, so I made a “How to make vibrato simple” video.
I knew people wanted quick warmups to do before singing, so I created that.
To me, it’s always been about listening to what my audience wants and needs, and not about what I think they would like.
After a while. I developed consistency. Posting one video every week at the same time will help you build your audience. They will be waiting for your post and that creates some nice anticipation.
I compare it to waiting for a new episode of your favorite TV show every week.
