Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melerick Harris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melerick, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
“I hope to be remembered as an honorable go-getter, navigating my journey from high school dropout to successful business owner. I’ve always prioritized the well-being of others, often placing myself in a secondary position. For my children, I want them to understand that the key to life, dreams, and goals lies in acquiring knowledge first and foremost.
Having seen my parents toil tirelessly for everything they had, I aspired to adopt their strong work ethic and take it a step further by establishing my own legacy to pass on. I want my children to embrace this mindset and go the extra mile to secure a prosperous life not only for themselves but for the next generation as well. My aim has always been to instill a legacy of ownership and innovation within my circle of peers and family.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Certainly, here’s a more humanized version of the response:
“Hey there, I’m Melerick Harris, and I grew up bouncing between Wilmington, Delaware, and Maxton, NC. School wasn’t my thing, but ‘Reading Rainbow’ and ‘The Muppet Babies’ sparked this wild imagination in me. They made me believe I could be anyone, go anywhere.
In my late teens, I lost my academic path. But then, in my twenties, I stumbled into the world of mental health as a youth mentor, and I’ve been in that space ever since. Watching how creativity can heal, I was inspired to create a place where therapy isn’t just talk—it’s about expressing yourself in all sorts of ways.
A while back, I started Art of Conversation. We do all kinds of stuff—canvas art, music, spoken word, even cooking—to give folks, young and old, a space to be themselves and find healing. We’ve been lucky to bring this to schools all over Atlanta and nearby areas, and we’ve worked with adults and summer camps too.
What makes us different? We’re all about blending therapy with creativity. We want to make a safe space where you can share anything you want through art. Our goal is to give people a chance to speak up and share their stories through whatever way feels right.
The best part? Seeing the folks we work with find their confidence and voice, not just during our sessions, but in their everyday lives. At Art of Conversation, we’re all about nurturing that creative spark and helping you find some peace through art.”
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
“Thinking back, I believe it started when I was out there marketing for other companies, not to sound cliche , but I think what really set me apart was my integrity. Building my name on honesty has always been my thing. I take pride in being someone who doesn’t just point out problems but actually works hard to fix them. I’ve always believed in making therapy feel more human—because at the end of the day, as people we all just want someone who’ll really listens.”
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
“I’ve come to realize that the principles and ethics that govern our neighborhoods don’t always seamlessly translate to the world of business. It’s important to recognize that not everyone will share your perspectives or values. While you might hold yourself to a certain standard, you can’t assume that everyone else will follow suit. The dynamics of the business world are distinct and often diverge from our personal expectations and experiences.”
