Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melba Tellez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Melba thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Growing up in a single-parent household with a mom who worked multiple jobs to provide for our family, I learned the importance of hard work and perseverance at a young age. Despite the challenges we faced, my mom always instilled in me the value of taking risks and being bold, even in the face of fear. Her unwavering support and encouragement significantly impacted my personal and professional journey.
One particular story that stands out is when I applied for my first job. I was only 16 at the time, and I remember thinking there was no way I could get hired without experience. However, my mom encouraged me to try anyway, and thanks to her encouragement, it wasn’t long before I landed my first job. Amongst many hands-on skills, that experience taught me the importance of taking risks and believing in myself, even when things seem out of reach.
As I entered the workforce and worked my way through college, my mom’s lessons continued to guide me. Whenever I faced a challenging project or task, I reminded myself that I could handle it because I had already overcome many obstacles. This confidence has helped me succeed in my career and not shy away from difficult opportunities.
Overall, my mom’s unwavering support, encouragement, and work ethic have profoundly impacted my life and career. She taught me to never give up, even in the face of adversity, and to always be bold and take risks. Her lessons have helped me become the confident and successful person I am today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Melba Tellez, and I am the founder of Mujeres on the Rise, a community that helps Latinas rise in their personal and professional lives.
My passion for empowering Latinas stems from my own experience growing up as a first-generation Mexican-American. As a child, I saw firsthand the lack of resources available to Latinas in my community, and I knew that I wanted to create a space where Latinas could come together, share their experiences, and learn from each other.
After successfully navigating graduate school and landing a job in big tech, I decided to take a leap of faith and start Mujeres on the Rise. Through this community, I provide resources, community, and coaching to help Latinas achieve their goals and realize their full potential.
One of the main problems I solve for my clients is the feeling of isolation and lack of representation that many Latinas experience. I provide a supportive community where Latinas can connect with others who share similar experiences and learn from each other’s successes and challenges.
What sets Mujeres on the Rise apart from other communities is our focus on empowering Latinas not just in their professional lives but in all areas of their lives. I believe that true empowerment comes from addressing the whole person – their mindset, their relationships, their health, and their career goals.
I am most proud of the impact that Mujeres on the Rise has had on the lives of Latinas. Through our community, we have seen Latinas start their own businesses, advance in their careers, and achieve personal growth that they never thought possible.
For potential clients and followers, I want them to know that Mujeres on the Rise is a safe space where Latinas can come to be heard, supported, and empowered. We provide a wide range of resources and services to meet the unique needs of each individual, and we are committed to helping Latinas rise to their full potential.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that exemplifies my resilience is my journey of dropping out of high school at the age of 16 to help support my family financially. Despite facing this setback, I refused to let it define me and determined that I would still achieve my goals.
I began working full-time while simultaneously earning my GED. After obtaining my GED, I worked hard to save enough money to enroll in community college. While attending community college, I continued to work full-time and took on additional jobs to pay for my tuition and living expenses.
Despite facing many challenges, I persevered and ultimately earned my bachelor’s degree, then later decided to attend graduate school. I now work as a Product Marketing Manager at Google by day, and I run the Mujeres on the Rise community by night.
Looking back, this experience has taught me the importance of never giving up on yourself, no matter how difficult the road may be. Today, I am proud to have turned my setbacks into opportunities for growth and am grateful for the resilience that has carried me through my journey.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Reflecting on my journey, one of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that perfection is necessary for success. Growing up, I was always striving for perfection and never allowed myself to make mistakes. I thought that in order to achieve my goals and be successful, I had to get everything right from the start.
As I gained more experience in the workforce, I quickly learned that perfectionism can actually hinder your potential. If you’re not failing, it’s possible that you’re not challenging yourself enough. This realization was eye-opening, and it made me reevaluate my mindset toward failure and success.
It was then that I also recognized how my fear of failure and need for perfectionism were holding me back from pursuing my passions and taking risks. I had to let go of the idea that everything had to be perfect and embrace my strengths and weaknesses. This shift in mindset allowed me to make progress toward my goals, and I learned that imperfection is not only acceptable – but necessary.
