We recently connected with Melanie Martin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Melanie, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
“Our mission is to help as many people as possible become better versions of themselves, as God intends. We aim to assist individuals in building a personal relationship with God, understanding that each person has a unique purpose and destiny. God knows the plans He has for us—plans to prosper us and not harm us, plans to give us a better future. Our business is built with God at the center of everything we do.”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Our brand, We Are The Martins, centers around our family’s journey, which began with our YouTube channel documenting my husband’s path to the Olympics/Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Now, we showcase our creative sides. I’m Melanie M. Martin, and while I hold many titles, the most important ones to me are child of God, mother, and wife. In 2020, our focus shifted, and I wrote and published my first bestselling book on December 1st. Since then, we’ve published multiple bestselling books, including a children’s series on disability awareness. Our latest offerings are prayer journals covering different topics.
I began creating prayer journals to cope with my own experiences and emotions. Writing became a way to free myself from emotional constraints, allowing me to release my feelings onto paper. When I created the prayer journal, I thought of others and how much I knew it would help them, as it did me. With our brand, we aim to support people not only physically but also spiritually and emotionally.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is seeing my ideas come to life. I’ve always been the kind of person who imagines things before seeing them. This talent was passed down to my oldest daughter. When I was pregnant, all I could do was imagine my life differently. I was so young and knew there was so much more in store for me, so I dreamed big. Once I have a title for a book or journal in my mind, I can’t sleep until I bring it to life on Canva or other platforms. Seeing the vision come to life is the best part of this journey, and witnessing how it positively affects others is an added bonus.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, I can share a story. There are many, but one that’s close to my heart is the time my family and I became homeless. For those who don’t know me, I have two daughters, a son, and a husband who is paralyzed from the waist down. We stepped out in faith and moved to a new state. One important lesson for life, business, and a career is to always pray and be prepared.
Career-wise, I was waiting for my nursing license to transfer to the new state. While I waited, I continued to create, and this is when I developed my first prayer journal. After finishing it, I reached out for print quotes but was quoted more than what I had saved. My husband was still competing for Team USA to get to the Olympics/Paralympics, so we needed funds for his international competitions. We also had a family to care for.
Though we had a place to stay, we decided to live with family to save money and continue building. Unfortunately, that situation didn’t work out, and we found ourselves homeless in a state we didn’t know, with no one around. Things looked bleak, but there was a lesson in everything.
I learned that the family member we stayed with needed help, which we arranged for them. I realized that just because someone else had a smooth experience transferring their nursing license didn’t mean mine would be the same. I also learned that being part of something doesn’t mean you have to stay, especially if you’re being treated poorly.
Before we got our new home, we faced many difficult tests. Each test produced patience, faith, and an amazing testimony. My husband retired from competitive athletics and now focuses on his walking process and his brand, Raw Natural Strength. I worked where I was licensed. Our brand created more affordable prayer journals, and we sell the first journal as a special edition due to printing costs.
Even though we had to do things differently, I wouldn’t change a thing. Our faith is stronger for it, and we trust only in God.
