We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Melanie Klein. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Melanie below.
Hi Melanie, thanks for joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
A tenure-track position in academia is the holy grail! I’d been diligently working toward that title as an adjunct professor for 15 years and loved my career, my students and the powerful experiences that went with the job. Eighteen months after I had been hired for that coveted position of tenure-track professor, I decided it was time to quit and open my coaching and consulting business full -time. As a single mother with the “ideal” job and security, this decision was incredibly risky and scary… but I knew without a shadow of a doubt that it was time to make a pivot.
The ability to support and guide clients on a deep level 1:1 was a calling and a desire. I’d been utilizing my skills, experiences, practices in mindfulness, embodiment and advocacy as well as consciousness leadership and my sociology degrees to teach and empower my students well beyond the classroom. Yet, there was a limit on how freely I could work and mix it up within academia. I felt compelled to offer my unique and potent combination of credentials to work in new spaces beyond the classroom. It was a powerful and undeniable moment of tapping into what I truly felt called to do and trusting that it would all work out. And it did. And I’m so grateful. And it’s exactly what I support entrepreneurs, creatives, luminaries and change makers do in their lives and business.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a sought-after empowerment + success coach working with individuals and teams across the country to align and integrate their personal and professional spheres for increased success and abundance without compromising their joy.
I’m also a successful writer, speaker, and Professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies and have written and/or contributed to over 9 books on empowerment, personal transformation for collective liberation and cultivating resilience. Highlighting how to cultivate and sustain a growth mindset is key, embodying growth consciousness is the game changer! One of my superpowers is inspiring, supporting and guiding my clients into deeper and more expansive experiences of success.
Combining over two decades of professional and personal work, I integrate my background in mindfulness and embodied wisdom with her academic expertise and advocacy work. In this way, I am able to offer a holistic and unique pathway to personal freedom and prosperity, one that is customized and designed for each individual.
In addition to working with 1:1 clients and co-coaching a 90-day group coaching experience with Emily Bossert, I have taught and facilitated workshops and seminars on a range of topics including resilience, success mindset, abundance, mindfulness, empowerment and cultivating sustainable and consistent personal and professional growth.
My TEDx, Conscious Empowerment and Collective Liberation, is now available online. It is the culmination of over two decades of work and shares the central spoke to all my work; how to become consciously empowered and contribute to the collective good in our own unique way.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was that I was inherently unworthy and, as a result, all of the negative experiences I’d had in my life as a woman were my fault. As I mentioned in my TEDx, my first mentor helped me understand the systemic obstacles in my way and how my self-concept had been negatively shaped in this environment. Understanding this social environment and I was a statistic in a larger pattern was incredibly liberating. But it wasn’t enough. My mindfulness and embodiment practices allow me to not only unlearn, but become comfortable in the discomfort and create new storylines and ways of being.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Integrity, authenticity and excellence are three core values in life and business. I value my clients, students and community and it’s important for that to translate into the way I work, serve and support.
In serving and supporting from this foundation, my high level of care and consideration are palpable and incredibly supportive to the clients I work with. This creates an optimal environment for transformation, growth and expansion. Paired with my commitment to excellence and a well-developed skillset, I offer a powerful experience with profound results.
The implementation of my values, skill set and the results my clients experience is how I was able to build and maintain a reputation that builds trust, creates interest and engagement as well as a consistent flow of happy clients.
