Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melanie Jean. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melanie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
So I have been self taught in creating my lettering style. I’ve come a long way from the wedding signage I did for our own wedding in 2017, and thank goodness (it’s a little embarrassing!)🙈 When I launched Jean Calligraphy Co., I took a hand lettering course to hone in on my skill + learn more about it & from there it’s been lots of practice and has improved with all the repetition.
Melanie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I create custom hand lettered wedding and event signage! Specializing in acrylic, but I have also written on wood or chalkboards + willing to try whatever you have for me to write on. I found myself turning this hobby into something bigger after having our first son. I knew I wanted to stay home with him and wanted to be able to do something from home, but didn’t know exactly what that would be. I kept mulling over ideas for almost a year, of what gifts/talents do I have and that I love to do, and landed on creating signage, Jean Calligraphy Co.! I LOVE creating signage for your special day — anything from welcome signs to seating charts, placecards to table numbers, etc. It’s one less task for you to have to worry about, when you hire me to create your signage. It’s fun to have your wedding colors and theme represented in your signage that really ties your day all together.
As a mom of two boys now, this has been such an amazing outlet for me to be creative and have “work” to look forward to do outside of being a mom. This has been so crucial in keeping a balanced life for me, and I feel so blessed to be able to share my talents with the wedding industry and all of you!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As a creative, you sometimes wonder how the client will respond to your work. Like will it be what they expected or more than they could have dreamed of?! So the most rewarding aspect would have to be hearing their reaction to sneak peak photos I share with them. And secondly, just as rewarding is when I receive professional photos of the signage all set up on the big day! How it was placed, decorated, and the scenery🤩
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Stay at home mom of two says it all. Moms are incredible and straight up hero’s. And on top of being a full time mom, running this signage business. My boys are my purpose. This business is what fuels me and is my absolute passion. Huge shoutout to my husband for always making sure I have the time to create all the signage! As a mom, your time can be pretty limited and even more valuable. So I’m so grateful we make it happen!
