We recently connected with Melanie Inman and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Our biggest risk with BHC was jumping from a career position to a brand new business owner! My husband and I both have healthcare career jobs that we went to college for. When we started BHC, I never, ever imagined that I would leave behind a career that I dreamed of since high school and have a college degree for. I managed to carry out both jobs- one in dental hygiene and one as a new entrepreneur in screen printing for just over 1 year. Business continued to grow and I was working about 70 hours a week. Thankfully, my husband knows the ropes too and put in some hours on his end. I slowly started dropping hours in dental hygiene and began to realize that there couldn’t be a balance between the 2. So, I jumped into business ownership and haven’t looked back since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We provide services such as screen printing, embroidery, sublimation, and basic signage/promotional products. I have always had an artsy side and working from design to print on everything from shirts & hats to mousepads & keychains is totally my wheelhouse! Our customers have said time & time again that our attention to detail and our high level of communication is what keeps them coming back for more.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth! We have spent absolutely nothing on actual advertising! Sure, we sponsor little league teams, donate to school events, etc, but true paid sponsorship is something we’ve never had to do. The fact that we are able to stay busy because people have good things to say about us is what really keeps us pushing for more.

How did you build your audience on social media?
We started by inviting family & friends to like/follow our page. Slowly, as we started to get confident about new techniques & services offered, we would share those things on local business/community pages. I have also consistently tagged the business or group that we are doing work for, thanking them for their business, but also showing everyone else that this is the work we did for that group. Slowly but surely, we add followers/likes to our page, at a perfectly growing pace for us.
