We were lucky to catch up with Melanie Hansen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
Sleep is a complicated thing. Many parents looking for help with sleep either have decided they want free help to hack their child’s sleep, or they are too embarrassed to ask for help from a professional. Many think sleep consultants are just waving a magic wand and fixing sleep issues. My biggest issue in profitability has been convincing parents that asking for help is not wrong. Paying someone to be your cheerleader and supporter in a hard time is normal. We pay life coaches, therapists, fitness coaches and chiropractors to help us when we are struggling. Why not pay a sleep coach to help guide you through tough decisions when it comes to your baby and sleep?
When you hire a sleep consultant you are gaining knowledge and confidence when it comes to your child and what feels normal. Every child is different and every scenario requires a different approach. My favorite stories are when a parent is hard set against hiring me and then they find success in sleep training and take it all back and wish they other parents knew what they now know.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Melanie. I am a pediatric sleep coach that helps parents find more rest and confidence in their parenting. Getting your child to sleep better means you sleep better. When the whole house gets more sleep, everyone is more eager to learn, help each other, and show more love. The best way to feel connected to your loved ones is to be the best version of yourself. I was an exhausted new mom trying to figure out how to sleep train my baby on my own, and I didn’t know how to be the best version of me when I was so tired. Sleep training felt impossible. I decided it was important for my own mental health to sleep train my daughter, so I stuck with it. I cried with her, but we got it done and she became a wonderful sleeper. This allowed me to have alone time with my husband and to get prepared for the next day ahead. I was less stressed and on edge because I was confident my baby would sleep through the night or nap. The anxiety I felt of the unknown always kept me on edge. I don’t want that for any other parents. I want them to be less stressed, and more rested. My goal is to help all parents feel a sense of confidence in their own parenting skills, knowing they can set firm but loving boundaries around sleep, which will bleed into other aspects of parenting.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Making connections with real people. When you make friends out there in the world, they recommend you because they believe in you. When you have connections with others in business, they think of you when the opportunity arises. We are all out there to rise each other up, and the more you put yourself out there, the higher you will rise.
