We recently connected with Melanie Dubbin and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
My talent was natural, I had to trust that my intuition was correct when healing. The results mounted in clients that would return to me month after month for years and years. This created the foundation at which the rest would unfold. I began to see that I had a knack for creating spaces that people really enjoyed. I partnered my knack for creating comforting spaces with massage and launched the vision “A Place To Heal” I brought several people along side me and soon realized I was also gifted in the ability to encourage others, so that’s what I did, I have a team of around 20 employees today and we have plans for our future. I have brilliant and hard working people committed to the vision. I am one of many of the treasures on the team. Our therapists are hands down some of the best. Our management, sales and marketing team are next level brilliant. Our team, together plan to create wonderful ways to continue to bring healing to the people. For me personally, I know I wouldn’t be capable of growing a business, maintaining a team or serving as many people that we serve without the willingness to remain teachable.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The Well Co. is a Massage and Sauna Wellness Studio. We have two locations. One in Duluth, MN and one in Beaver Bay, MN. We offer Lake Superior hot stones, signature aromatherapy, steamed towels and signature Well Tea complimentary with every massage. We offer a spa enhancement menu where guests can add on foot scrubs and muds, facials, dry brushing, deep pain relief and locally grown CBD. At our Duluth location we have an 8 person wood fired sauna where we offer a 75 minute guided sauna, cycling through hot and cold therapy to achieve health and wellness and of course euphoria. We have designed a Well Tea Co. where our very own master crafts signature recipes. We source our ingredients from California and Oregon, we develop the recipes and create the batches here in Duluth. We currently have 8 recipes and rotate a limited seasonal blend. We have created our own oil and body line as well. Franky Face is our best seller. Mask, Toner and Cream drenched in Frankincense and Lavender. Locally made just for The Well. We use this in our facials and sell it for retail. Our Signature Oil is The Woods Blend. Custom designed with our northland trees Balsam Fir, Pine & Cedar. We have in store and online shopping. We hope to break ground with our custom build within the next few years with the addition of our coffee and tea house at our Duluth location.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Game changers for me have been Craig Grochelle’s Leadership Podcast & Andy Stanly Leadership Podcast and of course Gary Vee!
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
This is one of the most challenging tasks in my experience, I am constantly trying to keep this fire going. Clear communication is a big key, doing what you say you are going to do and practicing servant leadership.
