We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melanie Baker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope to leave my legacy behind to my children and generations on to see that they can accomplish anything they put their mind too! My kids and future generations will be able to search me and watch me in cake action forever! I think that will be pretty cool.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a cake artist for 11 yrs. I started by doing small cakes and experimenting with ways to do cake that worked for me. I would take classes online and try and learn ways to make myself a better artist and cake artist.
Cake is art and it’s continual learning!
I love creating cakes that blow peoples minds. Cakes that don’t look like cake and especially taste good!
I have been on multiple tv networks like KTLA, Disney+ Foodtastic Star Wars episode which we won! Halloween Cake-off on food network. The Big Bake Holiday -Naughty and Nice episode Food Network Canada and published in many magazines.
I encourage clients to contact me for any event from a small 8 person celebration to 500 wedding. I always recommend 2+ months in advance to be sure their dates are available.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building your presence on social media is difficult! I am a one woman show. No one helps me with cakes to social media. It’s A LOT of work! In October last year fb removed my account and pulled my 10k followers instagram account as well. It was DEVASTATING for a small business. No one would help me so I had to just start over!! It’s been very difficult but I’ve learned and believe you just have to put the anger aside and move forward.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in my journey is to grow as an artist and to make people happy! There is nothing more satisfying than to see a couple or child so happy over their cake. It’s my favorite feeling in the world!
