We were lucky to catch up with Mel McVeigh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mel, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I wholeheartedly believe that everyone should be able to use the internet easily, no matter their abilities. That being said, I prioritize delivering an exceptional experience by focusing on user experience, accessibility, and performance optimization into every web design and branding project I undertake. Inclusive design is a big deal. A well-designed site doesn’t just help those with disabilities; it’s better for everyone.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m the lead designer, developer, and creative mastermind behind Loba Design Studio. I’m all about embracing artistry and pushing the boundaries of innovation. I’ve been in the web and design industry for nearly 15 years. When I was 13, I got my first taste of coding with HTML & CSS on LiveJournal. Playing with Photoshop and crafting layouts for my blogs became a favorite pastime. That early intrigue naturally evolved into my profession, and I’ve now been designing & developing websites for more than a decade.
I deliver standout branding and web design & development services, tailored to help my clients captivate and convert their audience. I’m believe that collaboration is the magic ingredient for success. I love teaming up with my clients to breathe life into their ideas.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Yes! My journey began 14 years ago, dabbling in freelancing as a side gig. Soon after, I secured my first full-time role as a web designer, but I was still freelancing on the side. Though I took on several full-time and contract roles over the years, I was working under someone else’s umbrella. Then, two and a half years ago, I took the plunge: I left my job to commit to freelancing and eventually set up my own studio. Today, I lead a small but mighty dynamic team and am profoundly thankful for trusting my instincts and taking that bold step.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative, particularly as a brand & web designer, is the alchemy of creating something from nothing. There’s an unparalleled thrill in conceptualizing an idea, starting from a blank canvas, and then meticulously crafting it into a tangible brand or design. Watching still designs spring to life on the web, evolving from static visuals to dynamic, interactive experiences, is both exhilarating and fulfilling. It’s this transformative journey of ideas, from inception to realization, that makes my creative journey truly rewarding.
