Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mekel Harris. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mekel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
In general, each of us is “trained” to graduate from high school and pursue a linear path to success. Thankfully, my first career as a licensed psychologist fell neatly within that path. However, I always considered myself to be a multi-passionate person, with interests ranging from poetry and songwriting to authorship to speaking. Three years ago, I found myself at a crossroad, debating whether to dive deeper into my psychology practice or explore other career options. It dawned on me that I didn’t need to choose one path and made the decision to pursue licensure as a Tennessee realtor® and continue working in private practice. Since make this decision, I’ve experienced an abundance of wealth and freedom.
I think it’s important to focus on having a career plan, while at the same time remembering that each of us is unique. It’s this uniqueness that propels some towards a more linear path and others towards a more diversified and non-linear path. I definitely see value in and support both avenues.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After completing my pre- and two-year post-doctoral training at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, I became licensed as a psychologist. Life circumstances, including the deaths of both of my parents, thrust me into the grief and loss arena. There, I found value in uplifting and inspiring others navigating the grief journey. In 2022, I decided to become licensed as a Tennessee realtor®, a career that actually begin in Texas in 2006.
As a realtor®, I enjoy working with individuals and families navigating challenging life situations. Not only do I bring the education and professional expertise as a licensed psychologist to each interaction, but I also provide compassionate service anchored in my personal experiences with loss. I’m proud to share my mission to add value to the lives of those who, like me, are facing life circumstances they may have never anticipated.
In addition, I love working with first-time homebuyers in real estate. The joy I feel when offering housing literacy/education and support is invaluable.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Both as a licensed psychologist and realtor®, brand loyalty is critical. I actively work to remain connected to my clients, whether my last interaction with them was months or years ago. Knowing that I remain a valuable resource to my clients keeps me top of mind on their end. I’m so appreciative of the times I hear that my clients thought of me (vs. other professionals) when they needed guidance and support.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
These days, I find myself reading several books focused on leadership and leader resilience. For example, I’ve enjoyed Kendall’s “Ninja Selling” book, as well as Erwin’s and Devoll’s “Leadership is a Relationship.’ The common theme across many of the books I’m reading is relationships. As a licensed psychologist, it’s felt reinforcing to focus on the human dynamic and doing so has served me well in this career, as well as in my role as a realtor®.
