We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meka Leach a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Meka , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
I took my first yoga class when I was 7 years old and knew at that point I wanted to be a yoga teacher. My mom would joke and say when she was young she wanted to be a taxi cab driver. I knew she didn’t understand and wanted to take the y200 yoga training. To appease me, my parents said if I pay 1/2 I can take the training. Knowing it was thousands of dollars and thought o would give up on the idea. But, it inspired me more. I started selling earrings to all my friends moms and at a local market. I was determined to make my money to take thr training. When I got close to the amount of money, I was 9 years old I went to a yoga class and was telling the teacher I almost had enough money to take the training. When the studio found out they gave me a scholarship for my 1/2 so I could start the training.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
When I was younger I was a very competitive fencer. I’m the national champion of y10 women’s epee and have won over 100 medals across the USA. I was training over 25 hours a week and was getting very muscular and my coaches, when I was 7, said I had to start yoga to get more flexible. Many studies wouldn’t take me as I was so young, my mom went into Revial and said she would pay for a month if they just let me do one class, so my mom could do as my coaches said. The yoga studio agreed and I took my first class at 7 and fell in love. It was my everything and more. It was the missing piece to my soul, my heart, my dharma. I started taking yoga classes 4 times a week and my parents are not yogis so they would sit in the waiting room waiting for me. I taught my first 2 hour yoga class by myself over the summer when I was 9 years old. When I was 10 I said I wanted to start a sacred menstruation circle for my peers to have a safe place to come and learn about our changing bodies and to know periods are not gross. My mom said you can’t teach a circle if you haven’t started to menstruate yet. 2 months plaster I was blessed with my first flow. Shocking my doctors as I was super skinny, had no signs and was very athletic, they thought I would get it later in my life. I was so proud and starting writing my first ever empowerment circle at the age of 10.
I teach Glowga yoga, full moon circles for adult only , family sound Journey, healing adult circles, I write and prepare all my classes myslef.
I am most proud of my Sacred Mooncycle empowerment circle. I have received many messages from yogis that have attend and said they got their first flow and weren’t sacred and were fully prepared.
I have volunteered many hours teaching special needs yoga. At a local recreation center, having yogis very high on the spectrum flowing beautifully in yoga.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It came to the day, when I no longer could fence and teach yoga. I was about 12 years old. Yoga was pulling me from being able to train hard and keep my name as the national champion. I sat in meditation for a few days and decided fencing was the pinpoint I needed to find yoga and it was selfish for me to continue to fence. It was time for me to move on from fencing and focus my time and energy into teaching empowering yoga workshops. I stepped down from fencing, a life I was know for and the face everyone was scared of to follow my dharma. My coaches called me a quitter and said I will always be a quitter and never do anything good. I looked him in the eyes and said thank you and walked out of the fencing gym that I was in the last 8 years 30 hours a week with my head held high knowing I made the right decision. Still to this day, I know it was right. And have disappoint in my decision. I’m proud I was able to stand up and say what my heart was screaming.

Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
I am under 18 so I can’t own a business. But, mindfulness with meka is an LLC and in trust to me. I fully have all Devon’s of where, what and how things are done. For money that I earn it goes into a Coogan account for when I’m 18 years old.
