We were lucky to catch up with MeiMei Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.
MeiMei, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I’ve absolutely loved my career, which has been purpose-driven nearly from the start. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa with Honors and Distinction with a BA and MS in psychology from Stanford University, I wasn’t sure what to do with my life. So I gratefully accepted a position as a Business Analyst with the prestigious management consulting firm McKinsey & Co.
I had a spectacular office, amazing salary and fantastic colleagues, but two months in, I knew it was not the path I would continue to travel because my heart wasn’t in it. I did not want to spend my career making rich, powerful companies richer and more powerful. When the 2-year program ended, I left.
Lost again, I networked with a bunch of friends and contacts. An acquaintance who had an MD/ PhD said he wanted to write a book about health and wellness. Did I want to coauthor it with him? I had always loved to read and write since I was young, so I said yes.
I went to the bookstore, bought a book called “How to Write a Book Proposal,” and wrote one for our book, titled “Sexual Fitness.” Then I sent an email to everyone I knew asking if anyone knew anyone in publishing who might offer me some feedback. A friend said her friend was very junior at Penguin Putnam — she’d take a look.
Two weeks later, she emailed to say, “I never do this, but we’re buying your book!”
Out of that, I got my first book deal, a mentor who was the senior editor at Riverhead books, and a literary agent.
I spent the next 25 years ghostwriting and coauthoring nonfiction books in health, spirituality, psychology and memoir.
I have met extraordinary people. I have been able to do deep dives into subjects that fascinate me. And, of great importance to me, I’ve been able to choose to work only on books that have meaning and make the world a better place.
I also started writing my own articles for magazines and websites including a regular column in Huffington Post and, for the past 8 years, FORBES.
Furthermore, I’ve been able to live wherever I want and work whenever I want. I worked from home long before it was trendy. I can go to a yoga class in the middle of the day. I’ve lived in Paris, Singapore, Costa Rica, and spent over a year traveling the world.
The only problem is, my career was not scalable. I could only work with one or two clients at a time. I could only earn so much income per year. That was fine when I was younger and carefree, but once I got married, had kids, bought a house and had more expenses, I began to feel a burning desire to reach more clients at once.
This and the million questions I get asked about publishing and writing every week is what inspired me to design an online course. “Your Bestselling Book” takes people through a proven step-by-step program to author and publish a nonfiction book or memoir. It takes place over 6 weeks, with a weekly Masterclass as a well as a small group Workshop where you get to share your material. In addition, I offer open office hours and have uploaded interviews with numerous publishing professionals on such topics as traditional publishing, self-publishing, audio books and author PR.
The first cohort of 20 outstanding humans started early September and will end on Oct 29. We’ll begin another cohort in late January 2024.
It is truly my life purpose to help people birth their books into the world in order to share their stories, make a positive impact, and also build their brand, attract customers, get paid speaking engagements, and inspire others. I feel so blessed to have started teaching this course.
Now that I’m deep in it, meeting with amazing people and working in a group setting, I only wish that I had started this online course sooner. It seems like such an obvious oversight. I feel I was born to be a teacher, I love serving people on their book journeys, and I am having such fun!
I believe what stopped me was lack of confidence. Since I was a young woman, I have struggled with imposter syndrome. I always wondered, “Who am I to teach a course like this? Who am I to sell myself as an expert?”
But I realized only in this past year that I should have been asking myself the inverse question: “Who am I NOT to teach this course? Who am I NOT to offer my expertise to people with a burning desire to share their stories?”
I didn’t necessarily find the confidence. More like, I faked it till I made it! But here I am, and it is going so well. I am positively delighted to continue growing my business!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a Book Guru, I offer a 6-week online course, “Your Bestselling Book,” which takes you and an intimate cohort of exceptional people through authoring and publishing your nonfiction book or memoir.
In addition, I work one-on-one to coach people in writing their books, and I also work as a life coach. My clients are high-achievers who have accomplished a great deal in their lives and careers but want more — usually a greater sense of purpose.
As a FORBES contributor since 2015, I have profiled over 500 entrepreneurs, CEOs and change makers on how they have aligned their careers with their life purpose, so I’ve become an expert in the topic!
I’d be delighted to welcome you into my course or you can approach me about individual coaching.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I have a fantastic story about finding my cofounder.
In January of 2023, I decided that I needed to scale my life and build a book coaching business so that I could work with more than one client at a time.
In March, I reached out to a phenomenal business coach, Stacey Sargison. She said, “You need to teach an online course and you need to call it Your Bestselling Book!” I sent an email out at once to all my contacts asking if anyone wanted to join me on a journey to help me create this course.
Two friends agreed to sign on as my “guinea pigs.” During April and May, I created the course modules and taught these two bold humans in a weekly Zoom. This process helped me to structure the course and refine my knowledge.
But then I found myself stuck. If I wanted to expand, it was clear that I wouldn’t be able to manage the technology, nor the sales and marketing, alone. I needed a business partner.
I had been approached by several random people on LinkedIn, but none of their services felt quite right. So I decided to head off to a conference that I’ve attended regularly over the past 12 years, Summit Series, and manifest meeting a business partner.
On the last day of the 3-day cruise, over breakfast, I got into a conversation with the founder and CEO of an online course creation company. He only worked with celebrities and influencers, he said, but his VP was looking to build a new business with someone like me – someone with a smaller following but fantastic credentials. He also gave me terrific advice. He said, “Don’t pay someone to build a course for you. Partner with someone who has an equity stake. We take 50% of the revenue for courses we create.”
That sounded right on target to me. I had manifested my cofounder.
I got in touch with Carrie the next week. She made me send out a questionnaire to my email list to test interest in the course concept. When it proved viable, she was in. We’ve been working together ever since. I love it. I’m the book writing expert. I create the course content. She creates the marketing materials, website, and manages the course platform and community. It’s a beautiful arrangement and I feel so blessed.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
– Tim Ferris, 5-bullet Friday newsletter and podcast. He has fantastic guests and goes deep. I love that he doesn’t limit his podcasts to 30 minutes. He does a ton of research and asks great questions.
– James Clear, “Atomic Habits.” Rather than setting huge goals, set small daily achievable goals. So smart!
