We were lucky to catch up with Meigan Hufft recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Meigan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
Since beginning in the photography field, it has long been my goal to be an emotive photographer focusing on motherhood journeys. Mothers are typically overlooked in documenting day to day life as we are usually the ones behind the pictures posted and shared. I knew that I wanted to essentially freeze time for women to look back on and be able to feel that exact moment for years to come, but do so in an artistic and creative way while showcasing their raw and real love. As a mother of four myself, I knew how much I longed for preservation of my memories with my babies, which led me to believe this would be a very worthwhile business venture.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For many years, I was a licensed in-home childcare provider. I have always loved working with children but also wanted to stay home with my own daughters while contributing financially to our household. Much like many others when the pandemic hit in 2020, I found myself at a crossroads in my life trying to decide on where to go with a career and what would bring me happiness. Photography has always been a great creative outlet for me, especially capturing beautiful moments throughout my days that often go unseen by others. I started to follow amazingly talented photographers through social media and fell in love with storytelling/emotive images. I didn’t really know how to begin, so I just jumped in by asking friends and family to allow me to use them as models for practice. I have done more sessions at no charge than I care to admit, but that’s how you get started. Hardly anyone begins in this genre of photography and is immediately successful overnight. You have to practice more than you think you need to and be committed to never stop learning.
I’ve worked incredibly hard to provide my clients with a special experience, from booking to final gallery delivery and beyond, I want to ensure that I am taking care of every possible thing that I can. I have a large client wardrobe that is full of clothing my clients are able to borrow for their session at no additional cost. Clothing that fits well with my style of photography, clothing in sizes from newborn through 3XL and most importantly clothing that makes everyone look and feel their absolute best. I strive to create powerful images that are artful, images that my clients are proud to hang on their walls. The greatest compliment I get from my clients is them telling me how easy, fun and most importantly stress-free their sessions are. Nobody wants to stand in front of a camera for hours on end and smile awkwardly, my sessions are held with a beautiful ease that people don’t even realize they are having their pictures taken. We go with the flow and embrace the chaos which is exactly when the magic happens.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Absolutely, yes!! Once you have decided on a genre of photography that you love and would like to create with your own spin, find a photographer who offers a mentorship to teach you the basics. The best investment that I ever made for my business was joining White Pine Photography’s Prosper mentorship. I owe so much of my business success to her and the knowledge that she continues to pour into me and every other student in her course. My only regret is that I did not do it sooner.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Hands down the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is knowing I am preserving moments for families, expecting mothers, graduating seniors, children’s birthdays and even weddings for generations to come. The first thing that we do when we lose someone in our lifetime is reminisce with their pictures, the first thing that we want to show our children as they get older our pictures of special moments within our lives, the fact that people choose me to create those memories for them is something I will never take for granted. It means the absolute world to me and has been more rewarding than I ever thought possible.
