We were lucky to catch up with Meicheng Chi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Meicheng, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on is a zine I created two years ago titled A Love Letter to My Chairs. In this project, I combined love letters, poems, and diaries I had written alongside my drawings. It was an intimate process where I let the most personal and tender parts of myself to be gently read, blending text with drawings of my half-awaken memories. The zine became a poetic preservation of my emotional experiences, a love letter not just to people near or far, but to the chairs created with my pencil strokes, and to the delicate and moist memories that lingered in my mind. Every drawing and text was carefully placed to reflect the raw and genuine emotions I was feeling at that time. Whenever I revisit this little book, those faded memories resurface, float in the air around me, like small water droplets suspended in front of my eyes.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Meicheng Chi, a multidisciplinary artist and fashion accessories designer currently based in New York. Born in China, I moved to the US, where I pursued Industrial Design and began broadening my creative horizon. My artistic journey started when I was 3 years old, drawing on everything I could find at home—paper, books, even walls. Growing up in a creative environment, with parents who are both designers and artists, I was encouraged to draw freely, without boundaries or restrictions. For me, drawing has always been an intuitive and expressive language, much like speaking. It allows me to convey emotions and thoughts that words often cannot capture.
I kept exploring various media and tools, seeking spaces where I could experiment and express myself authentically. Drawing has become a personal retreat for me, where I navigate and connect with my emotions in the most genuine way. I became fearless facing negative emotions because I knew through drawing, they would melt into the air and become color and pencil strokes that I could hug and keep.
I collaborate with artists, designers, and brands on diverse projects, including music album covers, visual presentations, and hand-drawn advertisement animations. Each project energizes my creativity and offers new, exciting opportunities for expression with creative sparkles.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an artist and designer keeps me sensitive to things around me and to my own feelings, which brings me closer to people I love, and, ultimately, to myself. Creating allows me to transform the romantic imagery of my unconscious mind and faded memories into new, unknown images and stories, or to let those images surface into my consciousness. I fold and unfold my memories, cherishing each crease as if they were moments from my life or fragments of my imagination—hugging and keeping every delicate line.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My primary goal is to remain genuine as an artist and to trust in the strength that comes from staying true to myself throughout this journey. I believe that authenticity has a powerful resonance—not just in the work I create but in how it connects with others. I allow my emotions, feelings, vulnerability, memories and experiences to shape my work organically, create art that reflects my true self while inspiring others to connect with a tender part of their inner world.
