Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mei Krusenklaus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mei, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
I’m incredibly grateful to the clients who continue to choose me to capture their memories, year after year. For those who’ve been with me since the early days, I always like to give back—whether it’s with a special discount or even a complimentary session. It’s my way of saying thank you for believing in me, investing in my work, and trusting me to bring your vision to life.

Mei, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi there, I’m Mei Krusenklaus — a lifestyle photographer based in beautiful East Tennessee.
Though I was born in China, I’ve called Knoxville home since I was four years old. Growing up here, I’ve always found inspiration in the world around me — from the stunning backdrop of the Smoky Mountains to the vibrant art and energy of downtown Knoxville.
Creativity has always been part of who I am. From painting as a child to sketching in high school, self-expression has been my constant. But everything changed when I bought my first DSLR camera while graduating from Halls High School. That was the moment I fell in love with photography.
In college, I started taking photos around campus and of friends — just for fun. But during the quiet, reflective time of the pandemic, I made the decision to truly study the craft, and I haven’t looked back since. What began as a creative outlet has grown year after year into a passion-driven business.
Over the years, I’ve had the joy of capturing everything from families and couples to engagements, weddings, and lifestyle sessions. What started as a dream has turned into a journey filled with genuine connections, new friendships, unforgettable moments, and so much personal growth.
I may be a small business, but every client means the world to me. I don’t take your trust lightly — these are your memories, and I’m honored to help preserve them. Every session is personal. I’m not here to chase followers or post about back-to-back bookings. I’m here to tell stories, to listen to your vision, and to bring it to life with care, creativity, and heart.
I’ve learned a lot along the way — from finding my editing style to understanding that the right clients will always come. And I’ve learned that what truly sets me apart isn’t fancy gear or a packed schedule — it’s that I genuinely care.
If you book a session with me, you’re not just hiring a photographer. You’re working with someone who wants to know you, who values your vision, and who’s with you every step of the way — from booking to delivery.
To my clients, past and present: thank you. Your support means everything. You’ve made it possible for me to live out my dream, and I can’t wait to keep capturing your stories in the years to come.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding parts of being a creative is knowing that everything I make is truly one of a kind.
No one else sees the world exactly as I do, and that in itself is powerful. That’s the beauty of art — it’s a reflection of who you are. It’s not about copying someone else’s style or following trends. It’s about honoring your own voice, your own vision. I constantly remind myself: no one else can be me — and that’s something worth celebrating.
Another gift of being a creative is the sense of community. I’ve had the privilege of connecting with so many incredible, up-and-coming photographers. There’s something really special about sitting down with others who are just as passionate — sharing ideas, learning from each other, capturing each other’s stories, and creating simply because we love it. Those moments are magic.
I also believe that creativity lives in all of us. It might look different for everyone — some express it through visuals, others through words, movement, problem-solving, or innovation. But it’s there. The most important thing is to never let anyone make you feel like your way of creating is wrong or not “enough.” Growth comes with time, practice, and trusting your own path.
Being a creative isn’t about perfection — it’s about authenticity. It’s about evolving your craft, leaning into what makes your work yours, and finding joy in the process. That’s what makes this journey so rewarding.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
If I had to name one key to growing as a creative, it would be consistency.
Show up, share your work, and let people know what you do. The more visible you are, the more chances you have to connect with the right people. In a world where so many are pursuing similar paths, word of mouth is incredibly powerful. When you consistently deliver great work and build trust, your clients become your best advocates — and that kind of organic growth is invaluable.
Networking has also been a huge part of my journey. I’ve joined several Facebook groups, and through them, I’ve been able to connect with new clients and grow my reach. Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation, one shared post, or one opportunity to create something meaningful.
But even beyond marketing, having a strong support system makes a big difference. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision and want to see you succeed. That kind of energy fuels growth and keeps you going when things get tough.
So if you’re just starting out or working to grow, remember this: stay consistent, build community, and always keep learning. When your heart is in it and you’re willing to put in the work, the right clients will find you.
