We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mei Jen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mei, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
ALIGNMENT, my debut album, is the culmination of a lifelong journey of learning, expression, and spiritual exploration. I’ve trained in Vocal Performance and art my entire school career, and this project weaves together my culture, identity, and awakening into something deeply meaningful. My family’s cancer journey is what ignited me to create a body of work that was healing and inspiring. Through it, I’ve found a way to help others explore the balance of yin and yang within themselves. Incorporating healing frequencies from instruments like Himalayan singing bowls alongside my voice has elevated my sound into something transformative. This album not only allows me to express myself freely but also expands into new mediums—music videos, digital art, film, and now even jewelry. It’s an ever-growing extension of my artistic soul, and I’m incredibly proud of it.
Mei, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an artist, musician, and healer deeply rooted in the fusion of sound, spirituality, and culture. My brand is called MEIDULOOK where Buddha Mei the artist connects all parts of expression – makeup art, music, production, fashion, entertainment, community. My journey began with a lifelong passion for Vocal Performance and art, which I trained in throughout my school career at Fiorello H. LaGuardia School of Performing Arts and Hunter College. Over time, this evolved into a broader exploration of spirituality and healing. These elements now come together in my work, where I combine my voice with healing frequencies from instruments like Himalayan singing bowls to create experiences that resonate on a deep, energetic level.
My creative output is multi-faceted—beyond music, I’ve produced music videos, digital art, photography, makeup art and even a short film to lead into the story of my debut album, ALIGNMENT. I also co-create jewelry pieces with my partner, these pieces are currently in the making, which serve as extensions of the energy from the album.
One of the things that sets me apart is my ability to channel intuition and spiritual energy through my sound baths and guided meditations. I incorporate crystal healing into these sessions, along with tea ceremonies, to create unique, transformative experiences for each group I work with. No two sessions are alike because I intuitively tailor them to the energy of the people present.
At the heart of my work is a deep desire to help others connect with their inner selves, find balance, and elevate their vibrations. Whether through music, healing, or art, my goal is to create spaces where people can explore and empower their spiritual journeys. I’m most proud of how my creative work, from my album to my sound baths, continues to grow and resonate with others on their own path to healing and self-discovery.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Many may not know that this craft requires constant deep diving within yourself, exploring uncharted emotional and spiritual territories, and translating that into a form that resonates with the self and others. My journey, for example, involves tapping into frequencies that not only heal but also elevate consciousness. This isn’t just a typical artistic endeavor; it’s about creating sacred experiences that transform and uplift.
What many people might not know is that being a creative, in my discipline, means walking a path that is both highly intuitive and deeply vulnerable. It’s a process of channeling unseen energies, emotions, and vibrations into tangible forms—whether that’s through music, sound baths, or visual and tangible mediums. The work I do requires me to be in constant alignment with both myself and the energies around me, which isn’t always easy. But that’s exactly why it’s so needed in today’s society.
We need spaces for reflection, healing, and spiritual growth. That’s what I offer—a connection to the deeper, often overlooked parts of ourselves. Creativity, especially when paired with spiritual practice, helps bring balance, peace, and deeper meaning to life—things we all need more of.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My senior year of at my Performing Arts School , I was in a very different place in life—training in vocal performance, touring with Dear Evan Hansen, and performing on major stages. Then, COVID-19 hit, and everything came to a sudden stop. As I transitioned into online classes, I enrolled in Psychology and Media Studies my freshman year of college. I was also signed to a modeling agency for 3 years where I was working with brands and creative clients. While I enjoyed my time there, something felt off—I wasn’t fulfilling all of my creative needs, and I wasn’t doing what I loved.
The real turning point came during my junior year when a family member was diagnosed with breast cancer. Balancing school, work, and supporting my family became overwhelming, but it also led me on a profound spiritual journey. During this challenging time, I found myself drawn to healing modalities—meditation, sound therapy, and crystal healing. I realized this path was my calling, a way to not only heal myself but to help my family through hardship.
That period of pause and detour felt like a moment where I had to fully trust in my intuition. I left the modeling agency, changed my appearance and gave myself time to heal. I left college to pursue art and healing with everything I had, even though it wasn’t the traditional path. This was the best decision I could’ve made. Now, I get to combine my voice with instruments, build my brand, create sacred spaces, and help people heal on a deeper level. It’s been a journey of trusting myself and allowing my calling to unfold, and I couldn’t be more grateful for where it’s led me.
