We recently connected with Mehrnoush Moslemi and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mehrnoush, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I think the biggest challenge to profitability in the industry is not conforming to the current trends. At some point you have to come to realization that what you do is not necessarily everyone’s cup of tea, so to speak. So you have to learn how to compromise by finding a way to stay true to your art while bending the rules a bit to satisfy your core audience, which will eventually pay off monetarily.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From a very young age I knew I wanted to help people but I never knew how I would do it. I started my quest by wanting to become a doctor, thinking that I could help people feel better.
While I was in college I realized that becoming a doctor was not for me but I still pursued my degree. While I was in college I took some electives and discovered my love for art. That’s when I started venturing into different avenues where I could help people out. My love for artistry led me to exploring the world of makeup.
I started by applying makeup on myself and once I became confident enough I started working on others and taking clients.
In order to make my art tangible I created my business Mehr Amour Artistry, formally known as Beautiful Nightmehr. I switched the name because I realized that I wanted to target a different kind of audience and focus more so on bridal and beauty makeup. I have now been a proud owner of my company since 2014 and it’s steadily growing each year. I absolutely love what I do & my clients.
The best feeling in the world is being able to make someone feel beautiful no matter what they are going through. Because the moment they see themselves in the mirror and realize how amazing they look they forget about everything that’s going on around them and all of the attention is on them and only them.
Once I built my clientele and worked at Mac cosmetics for about six years, I realized that I wanted my next goal to be sharing my knowledge and love of makeup with others; so I decided to become a makeup instructor.
I would have to say becoming a teacher is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. Seeing my students’ eyes twinkle once they complete a look that they thought they weren’t capable of doing, is a great feeling. Although I am still taking clients my ultimate goal is to get my students to establish their career as a make up artist so we can all make the world a beautiful place. .
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
On the cusp of covid my business was thriving and my career was heading in a positive direction. I had various events booked and independently invested in my business. Unfortunately, the pandemic affected me financially during and post-quarantine. During post quarantine most of my clients decided they wanted a hassle free wedding, which led a lot of them to tie the knot at the courthouse. This impacted me to the point I had to rebuild my clientele. On the upside of things, I was able to rebrand and discover new and exciting ways draw in new clientele.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I pride myself on sanitation. I make sure my kit & brushes are clean at all times. Especially in this day & age we are living in sanitation is key. I make sure when I set up my station I have disposable applicators, q-tips, sponges, paper towels, trash bags and gloves. At the end of the day I want my customers to feel like they can fully trust me and that I will take care of them.
