We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Megumi Bacher. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Megumi below.
Hi Megumi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
When I received an inquiry from Amie, a Japanese American mom of 2 little boys, to photograph her family’s portraits in traditional Japanese kimonos, I was so excited. Amie was going to wear her mother’s vintage kimono, the dad was matching her kimono color with his suit and tie, her little boys were going to be dressed up in Hakama style, and even the grandma was going to join in on the photo session. I was extremely thrilled! We had planned this for months in advance to ensure everything went perfectly.
However, as many parents with young children may know, things don’t always go as planned. The kids were not cooperating and didn’t want to wear their kimonos. I felt terrible for my client because everything else was perfect, but the kids were not on board. This could have been a disastrous photo shoot story, but Amie and her husband remained positive and calm.
As a family photographer who specialized in capturing kids’ authenticity, I actually LOVE capturing these crazy childhood moments! That’s my jam! And my awesome clients understood it, too. We decided to make the most of the situation and have fun with the shoot. I suggested some playful poses, like the mom doing an “airplane” with her little boy in his diaper. Despite the stress, my clients embraced the moment and had fun with it. My kids are older now and I knew how precious those moments can be, even if they don’t go according to plan.
The end result was incredible! We captured some amazing photos that showcased their family’s authentic love and joy. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such special moments that remind me why I love my job.
What surprised me even more was what the family ordered to print from their photo gallery. They framed a photo of their little boy in a diaper, showing his cute little bum to the camera! It makes everyone smile, and Amie told me it’s their favorite photo from the session.
My clients, Amie and her family, were dream clients for any photographer. They trusted me and let me be creative, and they approached the situation with positivity and openness. It’s not always easy to let go of control, but sometimes, when we do, we end up with something unique and unexpected treasures. I’m thankful to have worked with such wonderful clients.

Megumi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I’m Megumi and I’m a portrait photographer based in LA. I absolutely love capturing the love and brightness of people through my lens. My unique artistic style allows me to create images that evoke emotion and tell a story.
Whether it’s a traditional but updated and more artistic version of a family portrait or photographing kids expressing their own unique awesome personalities, I strive to capture the essence of the moments of happiness that last for generations.
My photography service is very personal and unique for each client. I believe photographs can show human connections. My clients and I often have multiple long phone conversations to make sure we know each other well so that when we meet for the photo session, my clients feel comfortable in front of the camera to show their authentic selves.
I’m passionate about spreading happiness, smiles, and confidence to the world with my photographs.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a photographer is capturing the precious life moments that families share. Seeing the love and joy on their faces as they interact with one another is truly beautiful. I feel so lucky to have amazing clients who trust my artistic vision to capture and freeze those moments to cherish forever. Knowing that my work will be treasured and passed down through generations is the best feeling I could get as a photographer. And if I could make someone’s day a little brighter with my work, that’d be the most rewarding thing as a creative human being.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Personal connections are incredibly important to me, and I believe that is also an effective strategy when it comes to growing a business. I cherish connections with all of my clients and always always have phone calls before the photo sessions to actually get to know each other. There’s something special about establishing a genuine connection with someone that can’t be replicated through digital communication. I trust that extra step is showing in my work.
