Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meghan Pulles. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Meghan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I always knew I wanted to be a musician, and performer. I believe this started when I was little girl running around singing “Annie” and “Cats”. I was also very lucky to be raised around music. My father was musical and we would get together with his side of the family and sing songs around a campfire. My father, and uncles all had guitars and would play and sing. I do believe that was transferred over to me from my dad.
I started off pursuing training as an opera singer in college, but never really felt connected to it the way that I did with songwriting. Songwriting was something I did alone in my bedroom to process my emotions, and it took awhile for me to realize that I had the confidence to be an official artist releasing on streaming platforms.
Meghan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My mission is to help the world heal the dark emotions through music. I write from a real place of vulnerability, strength, and healing. I want my listeners to really be effected, and to really feel comfort while listening to my music. I view my music as a healing mechanism for me but also for my listener.
I make it a point to come to the “altar” of my art, and write songs everyday. Sometimes these songs are songs I will put out, and sometimes they are just moments, but whatever they are I make sure to honor them and to honor that I’ve let something go in that moment.
I think the trait that makes me stand out the most against other indies is that I really have a drive that not a lot of people do, and I really just let inspiration take over. There are some days where I can write 4-5 songs in one sitting. I think a lot of people are too precious about their writing and maybe think that it doesn’t happen that fast, or something still doesn’t feel right. I really follow my gut, and I’ve found that so far it’s worked out.
I am most proud of the work that I do to help heal myself and others. I think the music that I am giving to the world is beautiful, and a beautiful legacy to leave behind and give to humans that are suffering through dark times. I want them to feel better, and get a musical hug. I want them to know they aren’t alone in this cold cold world, and that it’s okay to not be okay all the time.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing how your art has impacted someones life. I have had so many people reach out to me personally and thank me for writing a particular song. I think it can be a scary thing to put your most vulnerable experiences into music, release it into the universe, and know that other people will know the dark parts of your soul. I have realized that in sharing these dark experiences with people, I end up helping them be able to deal with their own scary stuff, and I make a huge impact on their lives. You can’t put a price on that.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story that illustrates my resilience is my story of my ear issues. Ever since I was 9 months old, I’ve had ear problems. I had to get tubes in and out of both ears twice, and now as an adult I have had 3 ear surgeries. It’s a scary thing to be a musician and to be told that you have conductive hearing loss, but I have really learned how to persevere through this diagnosis. I don’t let those fears of not being able to hear completely stop me, in fact it lights a fire under what I am supposed to be doing, and I allow it to inspire and encourage me to keep going despite these challenges. I have now recorded an entire album while going through ear surgery, and I think that’s pretty bad ass.
