We recently connected with Meghan Parsons and have shared our conversation below.
Meghan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started making macarons for friends and family, everyone loved them and people kept telling me I should start a business. I have an art degree and I love a creative outlet, and I’m a bit of a perfectionist with everything I create so I thought it would be a great challenge and something I could enjoy. I decided to try to stand out from other bakers with my attention to detail and unique flavors, and then I realized the demand for vegan treats. My vegan customers love that I always have a vegan option on my online shop and in person at markets. And I can make just about any flavor vegan with a custom order.
Meghan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
One day I came across a video on Instagram of someone making macarons. I fell down that Instagram rabbit hole, and the next thing I know I had spent 15 minutes watching macaron videos. Then macaron videos were always showing up in my feed. After months of watching videos, I thought I’d try making them for Christmas gifts. I have chickens, and these ladies give me an almost endless supply of eggs, so I had plenty of opportunity to practice. Much to the surprise of my family and friends, they received boxes of macarons Christmas of 2021. I have been a maker and creator my entire life and hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, but never did I spend much time in the kitchen. Months after that Christmas, I was still making macarons, trying new flavors, and giving them away. Everyone would tell me how good there were and ask when I was going to start selling them. It had never crossed my mind to do so at first. I work for a serial entrepreneur (who happens to be a foodie), and every time he ate one of my macarons, he insisted that I start a business. So, here I am, almost a year later, and I have a business and dreams of opening a bakery I never thought I’d have. I’ve got great loyal customers who love my products, and I enjoy introducing my macarons to new customers at markets around town. I sell and ship online, deliver locally, sell at markets, and cater large and small events.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Wedding and event expos are great opportunities for me to meet new clients. We go to as many of these events as we can so brides-to-be and event planners can sample our product. Macarons are great additions to dessert table and are favors that everyone loves. Clients like that we can customize colors and and names and logos to favor boxes for that extra touch.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I started small using my own personal funds to start and have been reinvesting my profits back into my company.
