We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Meghan Melia Kindsvater. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Meghan Melia below.
Meghan Melia, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I was working full time and in school for my MBA when I first started taking pictures professionally. I had been a hobbyist photographer and as friends and family took notice I was asked to do portraits or cover birthday parties and then finally a wedding. After that first wedding I was asked to do a few more, and within three years had to resign from my job to focus on photography full time.
When I first took the leap into entrepreneurship I knew that I would be able to financially support myself for a year. And if I needed to go back to work after that first year that I would. Thirteen years later I am still successfully self employed and passionate about the industry.
Meghan Melia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The first time I lost my breath looking at an image I had created, I knew I had found what people spend their whole lives searching for. I have spent most of the last decade living in a van and documenting wedding days all across the country. From New York – California – Florida – Alaska and everywhere in between.
The goal is for a person looking at one of my photographs to feel it in their guts. To preserve a moment in time so that even those who weren’t actually there can experience every detail, every emotion. I spend a lot of time acting as a witness to life’s very best memories. For that, I am incredibly grateful.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source continues to be referrals from existing clients and referrals from other wedding vendors.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to archive such special moments for clients. I recognize that these images are going to be passed down generations and that families will be looking at the work we created today decades from now.
