We were lucky to catch up with Meghan McMurphy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Meghan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
In the laser hair removal business, it’s difficult to find a place that isn’t a large chain or giant corporation. I had the opportunity to work for one early on in my career. Everything we did and sold there was a curated script, it felt scummy at times, deceiving most times. We’d sell people laser hair removal services at an outrageous price and assure them that if they didn’t have all the money right now, we had a credit program at their service! I felt drained, it felt wrong. That’s why when I started my laser business, I wanted to make a point of not treating people like a number or a stack of money. I wanted to be the person who would truly help them, improve their lives, not increase their financial stress. As a small business, I’m able to toss out the script and talk to clients like real humans. In this industry, finding a laser technician that you see more than one time is rare, and finding one that isn’t going to lock you in a room and insist you sign up for their credit card program is even rarer. I take pride in knowing that the laser I perform is top quality, clients are getting a fair price, and that I truly care about each person that walks through my doors.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Meghan McMurphy and I have been a licensed esthetician for almost 7 years. My main focus in my career is laser aesthetics. I also love providing facial and skincare services, and my favorite is the combination of both! Providing both services, I feel I am able to curate the best plan possible for all of my clients. My goal as an esthetician is to create a space where people feel safe, comfortable, understood, and confident in themselves. What gets me most excited about what I do is watching my clients transform into a version of themselves they feel proud to present to the world. At my spa, Alessia Capelli, I hope to lead the laser industry away from a cold, hard, fast, and cruel corporate style, to a more relaxed, fun, and collaborative small business style.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Something that I believe helped build my reputation as an esthetician is staying honest with people. I feel like my clients really appreciate my transparency with them, which is then able to turn into complete trust. Lying for the sake of making an extra dollar is something I am adamantly against. I am grateful for the clients that have put their full faith in me, and I am happy that I never strayed away from my honesty because it was able to be the leverage for me getting voted best esthetician in my city by my amazing clients!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy in growing my clientele has been showing up every single day. I set whatever mood I’m in aside for my business and just keep showing up and trying my absolute best for the clients who come in. This way, I feel the clients I have coming to me will feel compelled to tell their friends or family about me. How I made them feel, how I improved their lives, or how amazing their service was. I’ve built my client base organically this way, and I encourage anyone who is new at this industry or starting their own thing to do the same. Keep showing up, keep going!
