We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Meghan Fisse. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Meghan below.
Meghan , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
When I was in high school, I always knew that I wanted to be a makeup artist. My plan was to skip college and go straight to makeup school. However, my parents suggested a business degree and a little more maturity would give my career a strong foundation. During my last smelter at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, with the help of my parents, we found a highly regarded school for makeup artists. Voodoo Makeup located in the French Quarter was the place for me! My dad would wake up early on Saturday mornings to bring me down there and pick me up. I had mostly online classes with assignments due that same evening, with my dad bringing and picking me up gave me time in the car to do any studying. With the support and help with my parents, I was able to become a licensed makeup artist a month before graduating with my bachelor’s degree in business management. They were the ones that helped me start off my career and I don’t think I’d be successful if it weren’t for them. I have been a licensed makeup artist since 2015, and they are just as supportive as ever. At the time, I wasn’t happy about going to a university, but it was the best decision ever. I learned so much throughout my college experience, and made so many connections that would help me later on in life throughout my career. I am so happy that they pushed me to be the best I can be and always motivated me. Without their support and help, I would not be where I am today.
Meghan , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started to get into makeup when I was a cheerleader in high school. I would do my friends’ makeup for games, and it was always a creative outlet for me. I went to makeup school in 2015, and have been certified ever since. After I received my license and graduated from college, I had a very difficult time finding a job, but always knew I wanted to get into the wedding industry. I worked for different artists in my area then got a freelance job for a makeup store. I learned so many things through all of these artists and knew that the wedding industry was where I belonged. I love meeting new people and getting to know them. My first wedding as a lead makeup artist was my cousin’s wedding and I could not have asked for a better day. I started focusing more on my own business through social media and word of mouth. While I mainly specialize in weddings, I also offer makeup lessons that are one on one or a group, special events, and Halloween.
When working with clients, I am very thorough and will ask about every little detail to make sure that I am giving them exactly what they are looking for. I always say that my job is to enhance your natural beauty. I offer different styles of makeup, such as natural, soft glam, or full glam. I am a very personable person, and want all of my clients to feel comfortable in my chair. If they want to change or add something, I always tell them to let me know and it will not hurt my feelings. My goal is for my client to leave my chair happy with the results, but I always want to be happy about it, too. I will not let someone out of my chair if I am not satisfied.
Something that I am most proud of is how I have built my business and the hard work I put into it. Besides being a makeup artist, I also have worked a full time job during the week for the last 9 years. Therefore, I have worked 6-7 days a week during the busy season, and sometimes will go a month or so without a day off. However, I love being a makeup artist so much that I don’t even look at it as work. I knew that I would be giving up weekends to be in the wedding industry, but I also knew that’s where I belonged. I have always been someone that needed to stay busy, and that’s exactly what I try to do. It was never just a hobby for me, but a dream. I am very lucky that I have been able to live out my dream and have the support from my husband, family, and friends.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience by making a business profile and joining different groups on Facebook. I have joined many mom group, wedding groups, and neighborhood groups so that anytime someone is asking for makeup, I can respond with my social media accounts and website. I have put myself out there so many times, and it has really helped. Also, it helps when friends and family share my posts or tag me. I have also found that I received more jobs by messaging that person directly and introducing myself along with giving them any other information about my business and myself.
My advice is that it can sometime take a while, but never give up and never stop posting. Do not be afraid to put yourself out there or reach out to other business in the same field to work together.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what has helped me build my reputation is being professional, kind, and punctual. I always make sure to listen to my client. I am also a people person and love getting to know my clients,
