We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Meghan Carrasquillo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Meghan below.
Meghan, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was a kid I would look for any and every excuse to put on a show for my family. So I guess you could say I grew up with a passion for performing. Whether it was singing, acting, or dancing, I wanted to do it all. I just loved the sensation it gave me and I loved seeing the joy it brought to those around me watching. I started off expressing my creativity in school plays and talent shows. I was in second grade when my mother drove me to my first local theater audition in my hometown. I was so nervous at first because all of a sudden I wasn’t just putting on a show for my parents or my school peers, I was turning my passion into a career. I ended up booking the gig and then it all transcended from there!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always said that if I could take at least two hours away from someone’s normal day to day and bring them into a completely different world and just give them something to enjoy and sink their teeth into, then I have done my job as a filmmaker. Everything I have poured my heart into is worth it because I’m sharing it with others who are enjoying it as well. After I graduated from college in Florida, I decided to take the big leap that we all set out to do and move to the big city. LA became my new home. I knew it was going to be hard. Boy was that an understatement. I didn’t even know the difference between a theatrical agent and a commercial agent. I had no idea what a demo reel was! I was going into the film industry completely blind with nothing but a theater background in my pocket. I started from the ground up. I got myself into as many different acting classes as I could, studied with different coaches, tried out different photographers for headshots, submitted myself for anything just so I could build up some solid demo footage. I had to do all of this just to get my foot in the door. I worked two, sometimes three part time jobs to pay for everything, along with my apartment and the necessities of life. Once I actually did get my foot in the door and started getting more auditions, I then started getting callbacks, and then bookings, I was suddenly on a roll. The work kept coming, I was becoming more of a seasoned actress, working on so many different sets and learning from so many incredible filmmakers. My craft was getting stronger and my circle was getting larger. I felt like I finally cracked the code. I knew this only meant I needed to work harder and stay more focused than ever.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I love the world that I get to experience as being an actress. There’s truly nothing like it. However, my love for making films doesn’t just stop there though. With every project I work on, with every script I read, and every person I have the pleasure of working with, I’m soaking in as much experience as I possibly can so I can ultimately become the best filmmaker that I can be. The ultimate goal is to write, produce, and direct my own projects one day. There are a million and one stories to be told. I want to help tell them. I also want to give opportunities to other filmmakers as well and build a work family through it.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As an actress who’s just starting off in the industry, you experience hearing the word “no” quite a bit. You are constantly trying to prove yourself. You are always going to be up against a “name” or someone with a large social media following. My advice to all of that is to keep hustling. Your job as an actress when you get an audition is to make castings job easier. Don’t think about “booking” just think about the character, the story, and what you can bring to it. Have fun with it and then forget about it. On to the next. Earlier on in my career, I almost lost out on a role for a movie because I didn’t have any credits on my resume at the time. Even though casting thought I was the best fit for it, there was obviously a bit of hesitation of how much experience I’ve had. Respectfully so. I ended up booking the role and going to the table read completely off book. It was definitely one of those moments where I felt really proud of my resilience as a young actress.
