We recently connected with Meghan Alfonso and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Meghan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
The entire reason I started my nonprofit, The Pearce Family Foundation was because I wanted to leave a legacy behind. My great grandfather was the first Coors Beer distributor in the Southwest and he trail blazed the way for our family to have a successful business. Deciding to start the foundation there was a lot of doubt from even my own family. They did not understand why I would want to create something out of nothing and wasn’t sure I could take on all of that. After my first few years of running the nonprofit and everyone seeing what I was trying to do I have proven that the Pearce name will live on throughout our community. My legacy will hopefully be that I always tried my hardest and gave everyone a second chance. I want to prove I can build something on my own and support people in the Valley of the Sun who have been dealt a bad card. I want to be remembered for my kind heart and love for the city I grew up in.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
“It’s not what you know, it’s WHO you know” Meghan Alfonso’s family descended into the state in the late 1870’s making her fifth generation Arizonian. After graduating from Desert Mountain High School she moved down to Tucson to go to the University of Arizona. Meghan graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Studies and Human Development. Since graduating college, Meghan assisted with numerous charities both for business purposes as well as pleasure.
Becoming an entrepreneur in 2013 when she started the Pearce Family Foundation, she got her feet wet into how to be a boss and leader in the community. The foundation raises money for families at the home who have a child suffering from a chronic or life threatening illness. Since inception, PFF has raised almost $850,000 and has helped thousands of families with both bills as well as with a variety of needs at the home.
Getting the entrepreneurial itch about 5 years ago, Meghan created an all inclusive travel concierge business called, Girl About Town. Thinking it would be an ongoing list to sell to incoming travelers has quickly transformed into a full fledged business now located in Louisiana and Nashville. Meghan has a team of 20, two vans, a plethora of contacts of local vendors, and an eye for creating an epic weekend for incoming groups- specifically bachelorette parties. Over 500 groups filtered through GAT last year and they have already passed 250 booked for the year currently. The hardest part for us as a business is thinking of new ideas and separating us from the other businesses that have popped up since I started the brand. I feel we are constantly evolving though and have been able to overcome the hard times. The summer months are for sure slower but we have now expanded into Proposal planning and focus more on our guy groups traveling to Scottsdale. I have big plans on how to grow the brand all over the country and look forward to seeing where I can take it by this time next year!
Meghan is a wife, a mom to 1 1/2 year old Pearce, and a bonus mom to two amazing step daughters. She is excited to build an enterprise for her family.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media for my brand Girl About Town is the most important aspect of my company. This is how the majority of our clients in the beginning found us. We used a very specific hashtag, tagged every photo with and that was what got us on the map. No matter what your brand is you must spend time and money on social media, photoshoots, and SEO. The new generations that go onto those platforms are looking for consistency and proof you know what you are doing as a brand. We always are getting asked on our social platforms whether we are hiring, or expanding the company because people want to be a part of what we are portraying online. And that is fun setups with lots of pretty balloons and pool floats! Like our brand you might go through seasons with your followers and some will drop off but the ones who love what you do and who want to follow your story will stick around. I hired someone last year who had reached out after I first started the company and couldn’t even pay myself yet. LOL now she is a pivotal part of the company and someone who has watched us grow from day one.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for Girl About Town are referrals. We will execute someones bachelorette party in Scottsdale and someone else on that trip will use us in another city or they will come back to town and want to use us again. In just a few short months we are putting an event together for the very first client I ever worked with! The best is when the girls tell their boyfriends to use us when they are in town because they know we will make sure they have a stocked fridge and an itinerary of what their weekend consists of! That is why it is super important to me to always keep the customer happy- you never know who they might know or how they will share their experience with their family and friends back home!
