We recently connected with Meggin Tengberg and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Meggin, thanks for joining us today. One of the most important things we can do as business owners is ensure that our customers feel appreciated. What’s something you’ve done or seen a business owner do to help a customer feel valued?
In the wedding industry I think it is imperative to show your clients the love. Whether you send them a booking gift, bring a special gift on the wedding day or send a gift once you’ve delivered their full gallery. I think clients see so much value in you as a creative when you add personal touches that shows them you are so grateful for them. I love surprising my clients with gifts they didn’t pay for and they definitely don’t expect.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been a portrait photographer for over 20 years and got into weddings about 5 years ago. I have found that my true passion is anything love. Weddings, engagements, and proposals are what overflow my soul bucket.
When I was in high school I was always taking photos and I loved documenting life. I followed that passion into college where I graduated with a minor in photography. For many years I worked in the corporate world where I knew I didn’t belong. I have always been a free spirit and never handled having a boss very well. 5 years ago my husband and I decided it was time for me to leave corporate and run my own photography business full time. It has definitely come with sacrifices but worth every single moment.
My goal over the next 5 years is to photograph only wedding clients since that is where I find myself the happiest. There is something so special about being the person who captures an entire wedding day for clients to look back on for the rest of their lives. To be able to tell a story about their love is so fulfilling.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is being able to deliver a story to my clients. So many times in the hustle and bustle of a day, whether it is a wedding or a family session, clients are stressed on some level. They are praying everything turns out beautifully and all of the details they selected from outfits to wedding day touches are perfect. I will always live by the saying that clients will remember how you made them feel more than anything else. Taking pride in showing my clients that even if something went wrong on your wedding day or your child is screaming through an entire family session, I will be patient and we will capture beauty no matter what. I love when clients come back to me and say “how did you create an entire gallery that made my child look like an angel” or “you captured every detail we could have wanted on our wedding day”. It is so rewarding to know that I was the one that helped them obtain their vision.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is a fine line between pushing clients to realize that life is short and they should capture the moments and being a pushy salesperson. I have experienced all of the highs and lows with clients who were so grateful I photographed a moment to clients that felt pure regret over not capturing something because someone was tired or just wanted to be done shooting or even telling me that my work is amazing but that they can’t justify the price. My mission is to help clients realize that even though the investment is not cheap, it is 100% priceless. I had a wedding client one time during family formals, I was photographing her with her brother and sister and I asked her brother to kiss her on the cheek. They both laughed and said they weren’t going to do that but I pushed a little bit and they agreed. Less than 3 weeks after the wedding he passed away from an aneurism at 34 years old and she expressed multiple times how grateful she was that I pushed them to be affectionate because it was the last photo she had with him.
I want to make clients feel comfortable enough to know that what I ask of them is purely to encapsulate the love they feel for each other in a photograph. Because at the end of the day all we have is memories and if people are anything like me, those memories start to fade until I see a photo and then it magically comes back to me.
