We recently connected with MEGAN WEBB and have shared our conversation below.
MEGAN, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Breakthrough Boudoir came from the belief that everyone should be accepted for who they truly are and you shouldn’t have to conceal any part of yourself. For those that do, I encourage them to “breakthrough” their reservations and their fears of what someone else might think of them. It doesn’t matter your age, size, gender, who you know, none of that matters. Being yourself is good enough.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, My name is Megan. I am the owner and photographer of both Megan D Photography LLC and Breakthrough Boudoir, and I am a firm believer that you should always be unapologetically yourself no matter what. That’s what my business is about. Being YOU.
As a small town boudoir photographer, it’s not always easy to get your work out there. “That’s distasteful” or “You shouldn’t put that type of thing on the internet” are things I have heard often, and while others are free to believe that, I believe that you should do whatever you want to do as long as it’s safe for you and not hurting someone else.
What I offer is more than just a photo session. It’s a full blown experience. It’s a way for people to express themselves and not feel guilty or feel like they have to live up to someone else’s standards. Let’s face it, society wants us to be in a perfect little box in a perfect little world where it’s 100% controlled and censored. Personally, I’m pretty tired of that and it’s my mission to have all of my boudoir clients feel GOOD about themselves and accept who they are, as they are, and not feel ashamed by anything about themselves. Society’s little box can go ahead and be placed in a basement somewhere. It’s 2023, and people are allowed to accept themselves without being ridiculed.
I have had the privilege of working with so many people across the United States. Many have traveled to Kentucky specifically just to do a boudoir session with me, and I can’t tell you how humbling that is. The comfort and safety people feel with me is something I am overly proud of. Sometimes it feels like people come to work with me because they have “permission” to be themselves, dress how they want, do what they want, and be who they are. While no one should EVER feel like they need that type of permission, I’m more than honored that so many have found comfort within my studio.
Boudoir is for EVERY body and should be experienced at least once. Preferably more of course haha, but at least once. Everyone has the right to be themselves and not have a single damn regret about it and boudoir is just one of the ways that someone can do it.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. As I have said many times over, boudoir is for EVERY BODY of EVERY TYPE and I am very passionate about that. Being able to offer an experience to people that makes them feel empowered, emotional, sexy, strong, courageous, I mean who WOULDN’T want to feel that? Especially about themselves.
My mission? Or goal or dream, they are all the same to me…is to genuinely have more people come to me and experience so much self love that they carry that feeling with them for the rest of eternity.
When someone leaves my studio and says to me “I have never felt so good about myself” or “I can’t believe I didn’t realize how powerful I could feel”, it’s like I’m on cloud nine and nothing could possibly bring me down. Giving someone the gift of self love is just something I will never be tired of and I will never give that up.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Oh gosh, this is a bit of a personal story so bare with me. Growing up wasn’t easy for me. Not a lot of people know that I was bullied a lot in school for the way I look. I never considered myself pretty or attractive, not from a very young age and let’s be real, kids are brutal.
I was ridiculed often for one of my main features. “Big Nose”. “Bird Beak”. “Big Bird”. I can’t tell you how often I cried because of the comments kids made about my nose. I already lived in the shadow cast by my oldest sibling. She was one of the most popular students in school, so along with my unpleasant nick names, I was also known as “The hot one’s little sister.”
These names stuck with me from grade school all through college, and even as an adult. But the amazing part is that I’m just no longer tortured by them. It took me a REALLY long time to accept that I would always have this nose and I would always have an older sibling who would forever be iconic. And that it was ok. I was going to be ok regardless of what someone else thought of me, because it didn’t actually matter. What mattered was who I was and what I thought of myself and personally, I’m pretty damn awesome lol!
Releasing the negativity and unlearning the self doubt associated with who people thought I was was very difficult. But to be who I TRULY was, I had to let it all go and tell myself “You’re more than just an appearance” “You’re better than what these people make you out to be”. Once you let go of so much self doubt and let yourself be who you’re meant to be? The world completely changes and it doesn’t matter what anyone else ever said about you. Being yourself and who you are is one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself.
That’s truly what I want for my clients. I just want them to realize that being themselves is enough just like I did.
