Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Wage. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Megan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I have always had a job sometimes two for longer than I can remember. Being independent financially was always a top priority for me but I never thought it would be something I could do and work for myself. In 2013 my husband convinced me to leave my corporate marketing job and discover what I really loved. At the time I was terrified and had no idea what that would look like. I fell in love with yoga during that transition so much so that I knew I wanted to pursue helping others find that love as well. Being a native Floridian I also wanted to find a way to be on the water more. My career in SUP Yoga was then born. I started a 200hr yoga teacher training and simultaneously headed down to Key West to get certified in SUP Yoga and began my business teaching yoga on land and on the water in late summer of 2014. Nashville SUP & Yoga was a huge risk to take but it has been a labor of love and joy.
Megan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We bring the joy of paddleboarding and yoga to everyone. One of the best joys I have in what I do is watching people of all ages and sizes build confidence and trust in themselves in just one hour on the water. Paddleboarding and yoga has the ability to change you mentally and physically and when combined the benefits are limitless. We give people a quick convenient way to get outside, enjoy the water, be physically active and have lots of fun doing it.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When my business was first started I had a business partner. 2 years in she decided to move across the country so we had to make some really tough decisions about the business. Were we going to sell everything off and move on with both of our lives? I decided I wasn’t ready to give up on the dream and I wanted to continue to watch it grow. So I scraped together the money and bought her out of the business and rebranded it to Nashville SUP & Yoga in 2017. Taking on the full weight of the business alone was more than I intended but years later I wouldn’t have changed my mind.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I think it can be said for (almost) any industry that the best source of new clients is returning customers and word of mouth. I strive to create an experience that is so creative and enjoyable that my customers can’t wait to come back and bring their friends. More than 50% of our customer base is returning clients or people that heard about us from a friend. When they leave happy they will be back year after year and that has been proven.
