Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Vaughan.
Hi Megan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Though Vaughan House is now a place to celebrate joy, that joy would not exist without heartbreak. After suffering a miscarriage, we found solace in nurturing plants. Each one, carefully and lovingly selected, at times with the help of our son, Max, selecting plants as well. In June 2017, I woke up one morning with a single thought: “I want to build a greenhouse.” My husband Mitch and I immediately got to work and didn’t stop until it was finished in April 2018—each aspect designed and built solely by the couple. I’ve touched every single leaf and petal of every single plant and flower that calls it home. We found out we were pregnant with Marigold the day it was completed. There was also a double rainbow in the sky.
Flash forward a few years, and the COVID pandemic hits. We were a full-time international photographer and videographer wedding team, and all of our couples lost their venues. We felt awful for our couples and thought, “We have a backyard greenhouse, and we think it’s really pretty,” so why not lower your guest count, keep your wedding date and still get married? Many couples took us up on that offer and before we knew it, we accidentally created a wedding venue in our back yard.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. If it was easy, everyone would do it! Due to a disgruntled neighbor, we had to go through a stressful process with our county. The greenhouse was in danger of being shut down. The Lord protected us and we unanimously won. The cottage build was the hardest thing we’ve ever done. Long, long story short, we had a terrible experience with our contractor and we’re still dealing with the fallout from that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We set ourselves apart on multiple levels. You will not find the venues we offer + the services we’re able to provide anywhere else. We’ve based our business structure around our expertise in the wedding industry, and have taken notes of the major elements that can stress a couple out. We exclude those things, which allow the couple to truly focus on what matters – their union.
We also keep things small with only hosting micro-weddings. A micro-wedding is an intimate and scaled-down celebration that prioritizes a small guest list, typically consisting of close family and friends. In contrast to traditional large-scale weddings, micro-weddings focus on creating a more personal and meaningful experience for the couple and their guests. The emphasis is on quality over quantity, allowing for deeper connections and shared moments among attendees. Micro-weddings often take place in smaller, more unique venues, providing an intimate atmosphere that fosters a sense of togetherness. With fewer guests to accommodate, couples can allocate their budget more selectively, investing in personalized details and other elements that hold special significance.
With the cottage, the aesthetic design was 100% our vision and wow, did we have to fight for it to come to fruition. The materials, the textures, the colors, etc. – every single inch of the cottage inside and out was completely designed by us.
How do you think about luck?
For us personally, we don’t believe in luck. We lean heavily into our faith, pray for clear understanding before decisions are made and know the Lord will provide for us. He’s never failed us and He never will!
