We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Megan Vanderslice. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Megan below.
Megan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken was becoming a professional horse trainer. It’s not just a job, it’s a lifestyle. I started in the early twenties with not much except for my desire to succeed. This was what I was going to do with my life and nothing was going to stop me. It takes a long time to make it in the horse world, and you have to work hard and be patient. I had backup plans to fall back on, but that’s not what I wanted. I was beyond determined to be successful. Now that I’m in my 40s and looking back, it was a huge risk to devote my life to one huge dream. It was so worth it.

Megan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I own MVP Performance Horses. I train all around horses for a select group of clients from all over the US. We travel around showcasing the talents of our horses and riders. I got into this industry with a dream and a strong work ethic. It is an honor to provide my services to people with the same dream and desire as myself.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My advice for managing a team is to not be afraid to do the work alongside your people and just take care of them. We work incredibly long hours for weeks on end..: you have to be compassionate. We are all human working towards a common goal. You’re only we good as the people who are on your team. I maintain a high morale by just having a positive attitude. We have a lot of pressure to preform. There’s a lot of stress involved. You just have to maintain a happy mindset no matter the circumstances.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Working hard and just doing good business has helped me build my reputation in the horse industry. There’s absolutely no reason you can’t be the hardest worker in the room. When you love it, it’s not like work. I love horses. I get to make a living doing what I love. Just keep working extra hard, be honest, and just run a great business.
