Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Megan Thompson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Megan, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Most of our projects feel meaningful to us because we are working so intimatley with our clients. They are letting us into their lives, allowing us to tear their home down to the studs, and put it back together. There is a lot of trust involved in this process, and we take that to heart. The most meaningful projects are the ones where we get to know the ins & outs, and a little bit about the lives of our clients. When they open up to us, we can truely find solutions in design that are right for them.

Megan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have owned and operated Spark Interiors, an interior design firm, based in Denver for over 10 years now! We serve clients in and around the Denver Metro Area as well as in the mountian communities of Summit County and the Vail Valley. We work often with second homeowners that live in Denver, or elsewhere, and have mountain homes that need updating and furnishing.
What sets Spark Interiors apart from other design firms is our commitment to our process. Our clients always know what step we are on, what their decision responsabilities are, what step is coming next, and when we project completion of their project. We tend to work on very large projects that involve more than a few spaces in the home, and often our clients are moving out of their homes for the duration of the construction phase. By keeping in alignment with our process, we are sure to deliver a delightful outcome, without any additional stress of having to manage the project on their own. We are full-service, and offer a white-glove experience.
We are also committed to bringing our clients sustainable and healthy homes and businesses and work to find beautiful optoins that are non-toxic or are not harmful to their health or the health of the planet. This is something I am very proud of. You may not know it by looking at our work, but we have worked hard to purchase from vendors who also have a strong commitment to sustainability. We are proud that our design aesthetic is not affected by these choices.
At the end of the day, we work with folks who are too busy, or too far away, and don’t have the capacity to take on the workload of a major project like this on their own. They are so happy we can be here for them, so they can live their lieves, or run their businesses. Its a responsability we take seriously, and work we deeply enjoy.

Have you ever had to pivot?
During the pandemic we certailny had to pivot. Prior to the pandemic, we were serving about 50% commercial interior design clients, and 50% residential.
We went full-force to residential work during 2020-2022, and I am so thankful we had our feet in both industries. This is critical to the success and stability of my business, and the reason we are still in business today.
Now I am tasked with the challenge of re-entering the commercial market, which has been something fun to explore. The landscape has changed a bit, and what I love is that many commercial locations have a desire to make their spaces feel a little more like home away from home, so our residentail experience comes in handy!

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had heard of the Profit First banking method in the very beginning. I implemented this in 2019, and it is another reason we are able to keep afloat during slow periods. If you have not checked out the book Profit First, by Mike Michalowicz, RUN to your nearest bookstore and get started on this today. Not only will you reduce unessecary expenses in your business, but you will begin keeping money saved for payroll, operations, and best of all – profit!
